The main URL somehow lost a period between www and nytimes. Don’t know what happened to the archive, but I just re-created it. Should be good now. :-)
Peter Link@lemmy.mlOPto United States | News & Politics@lemmy.ml•A Missouri Town Was Solidly Behind Trump. Then Carol Was Detained.1·2 months agoFoolish votes maybe, but not fools, if they are showing solidarity with their neighbor and coworker who happens to be undocumented. This is progress, and they will be further awakened when Trump attacks Medicaid and Medicare.
Peter Link@lemmy.mlOPto United States | News & Politics@lemmy.ml•A Missouri Town Was Solidly Behind Trump. Then Carol Was Detained.1·2 months agoI think that you’re missing the point here. People who had some vision of ICE taking out violent criminals now see something different and they they are taking a stand against it. And it’s not happening to them, but to a single Chinese worker who they all love. That’s solidarity, even if they may not call it such. Something similar happened in NY state in the town of the border czar.
These events give me hope for the future. There is no point at all in finger-wagging at Trump voters. When the tariffs and Medicaid cuts come down, we will see many more people’s consciousness change.

Peter Link@lemmy.mlOPto World News@lemmy.ml•Backed by Trump, Israel Shreds Cease-Fire Deal and Kills Over 400 Across Gaza | Common DreamsEnglish11·4 months agoI should have mentioned the most important factor was the heroic struggle and sacrifice of the Vietnamese people, which did inflict many casualties on the US.
But the massive demonstrations in the US and around the world helped change the consciousness of millions, which ultimately even affected the thinking of the troops fighting in Vietnam. Many times the representatives of the NLF and DRV recognized the vital role of the US antiwar movement.
Unfortunately, both the USSR and China did not do much to help Vietnam, and Nixon was able to play them off pretty well.
Peter Link@lemmy.mlOPto World News@lemmy.ml•Backed by Trump, Israel Shreds Cease-Fire Deal and Kills Over 400 Across Gaza | Common DreamsEnglish13·4 months agoMassive and sustained peaceful protests often do work, as they did against the US war in Vietnam. I can’t imagine how confronting local Zionists would do anything to help Palestine be free.

Peter Link@lemmy.mlOPto Palestine@lemmy.ml•I don’t want to argue about genocide. I just want to honor Mahmoud. English1·7 months agoThe main point that I “got” is that you like to rant using lots of capital letters. (And I know that it is genocide, but understanding that is not absolutely necessary to act in favor of Palestine. Look at Bernie Sanders - he is a very critical, liberal Zionist, yet his actions in the Senate and his speeches have helped, not hurt, the Palestinian cause, in spite of his refusal to call it genocide.)
Peter Link@lemmy.mlOPto Palestine@lemmy.ml•I don’t want to argue about genocide. I just want to honor Mahmoud. English2·7 months agoI agree that posting this without any clarifying critical comments was a mistake. But I still think it was worth posting for the reasons I stated in another post.
Peter Link@lemmy.mlOPto Palestine@lemmy.ml•I don’t want to argue about genocide. I just want to honor Mahmoud. English3·7 months agoYes, that’s true, but I thought that a pro-Israel Jewish US publication having an opinion piece favorable to Gaza was worth sharing. It helps to break down the demonization of Palestinians that is so widespread in the US.
It’s not an article that will give someone brilliant insights into the reality of Zionism, but it helps create space for discussion with a broader set of people.
A Palestinian friend who lived in my neighborhood in the US is there now, in his family’s home. He said it was like 3 nights in a war zone.
