  • Fedora is looking at using the Endless OS metrics system for the collection of usage metrics.

This previously shared article showcases the details of Endless OS metrics, for those who were wondering.

Users will have the option to disable data upload before any data is sent for the first time […] and will not depend on Google Analytics or any other controversial third-party services.

While its still just a proposal, there is a lot of focus in protecting the privacy of their users. I’m glad they have those considerations in mind, and I hope it stays that way.

I recommend most people to read the devel list thread in order to better form an opinion on the topic.

  • My grief with articles like this is that their “X is not there yet” statement rarely comes off as “It has rough edges but its improving”, but always as “This product is flawed. Dont even bother”.

And itd be fine if it’s just someone’s opinion, but here it’s someone’s opinion in a news article. The effect is that someone unaware of the fediverse will read that, assume that opinion is fact and never try the platform. Not only that, they’ll also start stating the same opinion to others as if they experienced it first-hand…

Articles should bridge the gap of knowledge! Stop dissuading people from trying new stuff and encourage them to give it a go!

Sure, promoting lemmy as a drop-in replacement of reddit is downright dishonest. But it never hurts to create an account and see what the fuss is about. The article should work as a heads up to avoid headaches, not the website altogether.

Who knows, maybe it will be a perfect replacement for you, despite everything. I know it was for me.

  • Ok, reading the article, removing mods through voting doesnt sound too bad when you consider that turtle-something mod, who moderates way too many servers and removes/bans every post/user talking shit about them. Finally we can get power hungry mods out the fucking door.

Too bad they only decided to work on it to kick those mods keeping the blackout alive. Like why do they want to fight their userbase so badly

  • Ive been rocking an ublue image for a few weeks now and ive been pretty comfy with it. Before using inmutable distros the idea of having random clutter anywhere on my pc was quite frustrating for some reason lol. It led me to reinstall the os whenever i installed/uninstalled too much crap. The concept of an “always clean” os is what let me to silverblue: Now i can just delete a container if its getting too big for my liking.

Ublue is the cherry on top: Now i dont worry about updates at all. Its always a new, clean install every time i boot up the computer. One day ill look on the ublue’s core qualities so i can improve my experience even further. Also long live rpm-ostree rebase; it made the switch as painless as it could be.
