As I said, no judgement from me one way or another. Also we have no way of knowing what kind of contract she had or whether there was some kind of morality clause. Maybe this violated it. Maybe not.

All I was saying was that, whether right or wrong, employment can be terminated pretty much anywhere in the United States for any reason as long as it’s not a protected thing, which this almost certainly is not. So saying something is or isn’t a fireable offense probably needs some context. Because anything could be a fireable offense if the company thinks it is.

I don’t know so I won’t speak to that, and no judgement of right or wrong here, but this is the US. Anything is or can be a fireable offense so long as it’s not one of a few specific protected things. In almost every state. So making a post on social media pretty much regardless of content can be a fireable offense if the company deems it so.

I get that too, but I dont think social media is really a great place to get a representative idea of how people are truly feeling about things.

A lot of social media tends to evolve into echo chambers, so not great for wider views. As mentioned too, it’s not great for nuance. While I think most people are probably capable of getting the nuance of a situation, when “discussing” things online, having to type your thoughts out into a few small paragraphs, that all just seems to get completely lost, and only the bullet points, which are often the most extreme parts, remain.

Lemmy is also seemingly filled with tankies and people that seem like they want to be edgy just to be edgy or specifically to push certain viewpoints/ideologies. And considering that it’s not a widely adopted platform, I think it’s especially not representative of people as a whole.

And of course with the anonymity of the internet, people know they can say stuff just to get other people frustrated or angry with no consequences to their own personal lives.

I find it’s usually best to just avoid any social media around major and divisive news events like this. Specifically where people are allowed to comment and express their opinions. Everyone just gets more extreme in their views, are convinced they are absolutely right, and there is never any room for nuance.

I’m glad it worked out for you. And I also know that my idea of it all can’t possibly apply to every single company that was or is a part of that whole culture.

I just find myself sceptical of it all since I much prefer to have my own time, and my own space as separate from work and the people I work with. And perks like that just very clearly seem designed to get me to spend as much time at work as possible.

I never understood that whole tech/startup culture. I would absolutely hate for my entire life to be my job. And from the outside all these “cool” perks are very clearly designed to get you to spend as much time working as possible. No thanks.

Nah, they just wouldn’t choose someone who wasn’t excited to be there. Pretty sure they interview everyone before hand and watch them before filming before deciding who to pick. It’s definitely not just random.

I would say though that it’s not really a great choice unless you are already pretty tech savvy. And these days, less and less people seem to even know how to actually use a computer, let alone one that runs Linux.

Nah, there’s one key difference between lemmy users and Reddit users. They behave mostly the same, but there is also a sense of superiority where they just think they know better because of the platform they choose to use.

True, reddit though does at least seem to have a lot more active niche communities you can go to with active moderation (sometimes too much though) so it’s easy to at least get plenty of content without having to deal with that. Lemmy, not so much.
