  • “I know you are but what am I” isn’t an argument, especially when you didn’t engage with any of my points.

I certainly have no love for the US and it’s allies…as do I have no love for Russia and it’s supporters. As far as I’m concerned it’s fascist vs fascist…I have no interest in characterizing the conflict as anything other than what it is: Russia getting revenge and attempting to regain control after the loss of their puppet government in Ukraine…and the US trying to maintain a greater “west”.

Saying that the vast majority of aid is coming from NATO isn’t appropriate…given that almost all of that aid is coming from the US. If it was a NATO action then we’d see a much more proportionate distribution and large NATO members wouldn’t be able to take a pass. It simply isn’t NATO vs Russia: it’s the Ukraine & the US and their allies vs Russia and its allies. There’s too many NATO countries not participating, too many non-NATO countries helping & too many nations helping Russia.

When you simplify it, and your simplification just happens to match Russian propaganda…it is what it is. Russia would have us believe they are the underdog and are fighting alone against an expansionist treaty organization. That may be partially true, but it also and more true that Russia wishes to expand and they’re getting help from China, North Korea, Iran, Belarus, etc

My government doesn’t propagandize too much about Gaza…we have a much more fraught relationship with that crisis. You may think I’m American. I’m not.

Comparing the innate misogyny of most porn to being right handed isn’t appropriate. That sort of analogy, comparing something harmful to something benign, is the core of the problem - it serves to normalize misogyny.

We don’t need to go beyond the topic to illustrate misogyny and harm. For example, a porn store or site displaying simulated violence or underage scenarios to sell it products would be more appropriate. Prioritizing those categories is similar to prioritizing misogynistic lesbian porn over ethical lesbian porn, for example.

You don’t need to be dramatic and label an appropriate assessment of the misogyny of lesbian porn as “all men are evil”.

You must intentionally ignore how and why so-called “lesbian” porn is misogynistic. The baseline of the vast majority of lesbian porn doesn’t engage with how lesbians actually behave, for example, but rather it projects what male viewers want to see - typically with one or both actors behaving as a stereotypical man would.

  • This is incorrect.

While it’s true that most NATO countries are providing “aid” to Ukraine…there are some who are functionally not participating. Additionally, there are many non-NATO countries providing support to Ukraine. Also, there are many countries supporting Russia…and not just countries that could be considered their proxy or puppet states.

Characterizing the conflict as simply a war between Russia and NATO isn’t an accurate way to describe it…there are enough caveats to invalidate that description.

My opinion is that any characterization of the war that labels Ukraine as a proxy is doing the work of a Russian propagandist - because that is how Russian propaganda labels the war, for what should be obvious reasons. They would have us believe that they are fighting NATO alone, which is clearly not the case on either side.

  • Thank you.

I sort of get it. I get the concept. I don’t really understand what I have access to in addition to “Lemmy”. I get that my interface is different because I use Blorp…I get that whatever address a user is posting from comes with a set of admins that moderate their users and choose what instances they see. I guess I don’t get the scope of the whole thing or what I’m not seeing and why. I sort of understand that the “channels” are hosted on particular instances.

I’m a refugee from Reddit and instantly preferred this because I don’t get random automatic false positive warnings from the system, and there no mods harassing me and abusing the auto moderation system….so far. Maybe because everybody isn’t a bot and/or picking a fight with me.

  • I’m new to this place…I still have no idea what’s going on and little idea of what an instance or my instance is.

…but I’m an OG internet user and what you’re describing sounds like EchoNet FidoNet?, or one of the various networked BBS systems pre-internet. BBSs, or groups of BBSs would frequently drop in and out of the networks, and the forums/threads from the absent BBSs would still be there…but in a “cleaved” state. Very confusing to a user who used multiple ‘Nets (which was everybody).

  • I “opted out” about 8 years ago. I just ignore all the aspects I hate. I’ll hang out for Christmas dinner…but won’t accept or give gifts…within reason: if somebody at work want to give me a trinket, I’m not going to make them feel like shit about it. I’ll say merry Christmas etc

It feels so good not to be running around at the mall at the last minute to buy something useless. Makes birthdays better because I put more energy into them.

  • This is key. So-called “families values conservatives” often lament low birth rates, but can also make it impossible for their neighbours to raise children with their culture war bullshit.

But, let’s be real, they don’t want everybody to have kids…they want certain people to have more kids. It’s cultural dog whistling.

  • There’s a lot of a disagreement to be had here…but AI is a topic where we all pretty much seem to agree.

I’ve experimented with AI (so-called chatbots) and the best that can be said about it is it’s a tool…not even a good tool…for starting a project when you’re stuck. It’s absolutely unreliable for anything approaching a final project. I guess…it’s really great if you enjoy being pissed off that it can both mine valid obscure information, while at the same time lie to your face over and over…but then do a 180 on something that’s true or a lie just because you tell it to.

The only value I got out of AI was it made me laugh out loud once…genuinely. I realized it had created this entire fake universe when it was supposed to be researching something real…and like a crazy person I was scolding it…when it was apologing it told me “I’m sorry…I understand that I’m a bit like a toaster that was advertised as a chef…but really all I do is try to burn your house down”. I thought it was hilarious and appropriate.

  • Sometimes you seem like a reasonable person…but it all goes out the window when you present open Russian deception like calling those propaganda tools “elections”. Those referendums were clearly staged by the military…the Crimean one laughably so, with 97% support. You’re also telling on yourself when you use odd language like the annexations weren’t for resource extraction. Who said they were? Crimea is a port and the others are (were) industrial hubs and a land border to the former.

No evidence? See…comments like that don’t make we want to continue with you…and it’s an insult that you expect me not to believe my lying ears. You know very well Putin, Medvedev and many others have repeatedly referred to Poland and the Baltics as occupied & openly bloviated about annexing them. They’ve literally massed forces on the border with them, and every other piece of “evidence” one could possible need…overt or implied. Trying to deny Russkiy Mir is just weird. I didn’t even bring up Finland and all the other regions Russian officials have commented on.

I’m going to take a break from you. Pretty unreasonable stuff, here.
