When Gallup surveyed who feels safe walking alone at night, China's 94% yes was notable. But the real story is buried in the demographics with men and women in China reported nearly identical levels.

I love how the Gallup website just completely ignores the remarkable numbers from the second most populous country in the world and instead chooses to focus on Singapore (literally a city lmao) and waffle on about Europe for a while for some reason.

Edit: notably it only waffles on about Europe in order to try to excuse the clear trend of violence against women there shown in the data.

90% of the time for me it’s just because I posted in the wrong thread.

Other 10% it’s because I was cranky and went too doomer for a minute.

China is a genuinely safe place to live in!

Unfortunately I’ve also seen a lot of nationalist propaganda who justify this with “that’s why you shouldn’t let immigrants to get into your country. look at how Europe has fallen blah blah.” People losing their shit over the K visa debacle really left a bad taste in my mouth.

Oceania would have been on top if they were surveyed. Only places I’ve seen where nobody ever locks the doors and both genders feel safe out at night because catcalling isn’t a thing.

It helps having a tiny population where everyone knows each other. If someone tries to commit SA or murder, everyone is going to know.

It was surveyed, actually, 66% in Australia and 64% in New Zealand.

I think the 6% are the ones that would never feel safe anywhere. I used to be one of those. Anxiety is a removed

I loved walking around Beijing because I felt safe at any time of day, and in any crowd. I could use my phone, speak English, and take out my wallet on the street, which are all things I’ve had to limit elsewhere.

My dad never felt safest then when he was walking the streets of China regardless if it was day or night, I hope to one day experience that.
