If I was/u/spez I’d be delighted by all this. People hate him but they still can’t stay away no matter what shit he pulls.

The right move would have been to leave the canvas blank, but no way Redditors can pull this off.

I’m sure reddit algos would have made it into something in the absence of any contributions.

Also remember that most people did not migrate to lemmy. Just us nerds, so far. At least from what I can tell.

Yeah, everyone here acts like reddit is going down. Im assuming Reddit barely registered that any users left. If you go check out r/all nothing has changed.

Nothing has changed in the sense that the site is still there and people are posting, yea. But ever since the blackouts I noticed a decline in average post quality, more posts from fringe subs making it to r/all, more lazy reposts, etc.

To be clear, I’m sure Reddit will be around for a long time. But I don’t think it’s fair to say nothing has changed. Kinda gotta read between the lines a little.

My impression is that a large part of the user base knows about the controversy and likes to complain about it, but leaving is never, ever crossing their minds. The controversy is part of the flavor and texture of Reddit.

See also: people complaining about Facebook on Facebook.

Spez: See? People can’t stay away from my house!

People: <throwing eggs and toilet paper at the house>

Spez: B-but there’s no bad publicity, right? Give me money, I totally know what I’m doing, just like Elon.

? I mean the canvas would never conceivably remain blank for any amount of time. To say “no way redditors could pull this off” kinda implies that the whole of Reddit is mad at spez but we just can’t help paint on this little canvas.

It’s quite clear that many many users didn’t care about the API changes from day 1. They’re not holding anything back, they’re probably annoyed by the fuck spez spam which is an eyesore on the canvas (that I very much approve of).

So it was never going to remain blank, and I’m all for using the platform of Reddit to spread dissatisfaction about itself. (In this specific case anyway, I hadn’t visited the site in a week before hearing that place was back) Yea he’s getting some extra clicks from me today, sure, but this is another small knock to the site’s reputation. People notice, nobody wants to hang out in a place where everyone is removed about how bad it is all the time.

So nah, I wouldn’t be delighted. Any revenue he’s receiving from users bastardizing his name is peanuts compared to the cost of users leaving.

Reddit isn’t going anywhere soon or probably ever, I know. But user sentiment and reputation can destroy social media sites over time, we’ve learned this already. Reddit is no more bulletproof than any of the sites before it.

You don’t have to stop using Reddit entirely to stick it to them.

Using Reddit a lot less? You are contributing to the overall drop in numbers

Using Reddit to protest? You are reminding others of the reasons which may draw others away and drop traffic over time

Using Reddit to let others know of the viable alternatives? Again you may draw even more people away if they find alternatives that they enjoy dropping traffic further

Not using Reddit for anything other than protest? You reduce the value of Reddit by not actually contributing any useful community content that draws people again damaging numbers.

My thoughts exactly, this is still generating a lot of traffic for reddit, and more proves the point that it doesn’t matter what they pull, as long as they do some cool stuff that only happens on Reddit, people will still go. Maybe using place for advertising the fediverse would be better but even then, still using the system. Don’t know the answer, just not sure this is as effective as we would hope.

Looks like it’s just the previous place on repeat. Nordic countries form a union. Canada’s flag gets vandalized. And judging from a previous screenshot there were black voids and blue corner.

Good to know I’m not missing anything.

When spez uses this to show how high the site’s traffic was this month, I hope the investors ask to see the usage counts WITHOUT r/place. I’m sure they’re much higher than we’d like them to be, but still.
