Seems like the only way they think they can win is by making it more difficult to vote. Pretty standard, sadly.

On the flip side, of the many laws passed this last session in Minnesota, one was for automatic voter registration beginning at age 16. The other great one is if you request a mail-in ballot, you can join that list permanently and will continue to receive one for all future elections without needing to request it again.

I don’t know why the US still doesn’t have a simple and permanent voting registration. Or better yet, to not even have to register to vote.

This is the case in California — I can’t remember when I first requested an absentee ballot, but now I just get one before every election, along with a voter guide, with ample time to fill it out. It just…works.

You don’t have to request an absentee ballot in California. The state automatically mails ballots to all Registered voters.

DeSantis’s motivation here is transparently obvious; to keep the people who oppose his party from voting. We should be striving to make voting easier, not harder. A shame this is just the latest in a long history of voter suppression or disenfranchisement. Those of us who support independent and third party candidates are all too aware of the overt attempts to silence dissenting voices.

TIL that NBC has a sequel.

Also this bit helps understand a bit more why these requests are missing. Counties are simply following a very shitty new Desantis law.

However, a new law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis requires counties to purge requests before every general election.

In Illinois I can literally register at the polls but they create so many hoops in these red states it should be obvious what they’re doing. Rules for voting in federal elections should be set at the federal level but as long as Republicans and a few Democrats have control this country is going to continue getting worse.
