So, I have set up my own instance. However, I’m not sure that federation works as expected.
I can subscribe to other communities and I can post to them. However, if I check my alt accounts (on lemmy.ml and lemmy.world), the comment is sometimes not showing.
One comment was there, and I upvoted it from my alt. I then checked on my own server and the upvote was not there.
Am I missing something? Or is federation just “slow”?

it’s not only slow, it’s failing outright. And in desperation, they are adding code to make it try sending even less times to servers after a few connection failures.
The whole system is designed with the assumption that remote severs are easily reached all the time for live transactions, and there is way too much volume. It sends each comment and vote as a single item.
Yeah, I only see this comment when I’m actively putting the link of your comment in the search on my instance.
