Well, I consider BOTW and TOTK to be radically different in their format than all the other games that came before. Zelda as it is known the most started with Ocarina of Time and then moved forward until what I consider its peak with TP. Again, if you have only played those, you will find it to be a rather different game, but keep in mind that it is the format with which Zelda became part of the big leagues.

I thought Twilight Princess was just fundamentally “lacking” something. It’s easily my least favourite of the 3D Zelda games. I think that line peaked with Wind Waker personally. It’s also important to note that Zelda has change dramatically over the course of its life. OoT was a pretty radical departure from the formula established in Link to the Past. BotW feels more like the very first Zelda to me than anything that came between. Both the first Zelda and LttP were system sellers on their consoles. To say that OoT made Zelda part of the big leagues is a little disingenuous.

Perhaps not “part of the big leagues”, but for many years OoT was listed in various places as the best video game ever made, and it still is in MetaCritic. People who are even more purist than me will easily claim it to still be the best game of the entire series, and I can respect that, seeing how it did set the formula for Zelda for the next 25 years.

PS: if it was not for the fact that the dungeons in TP were top tier, just the fact that the entire game’s ambience is surrounded by this whole hottopicesque, edgy aesthetic of 2007 already makes it top tier for me for the sake of nostalgia. Skyward Sword, on the other hand…
