Observe the silence:
- No condemnation of US authorities’ harsh treatment of migrant protests.
- No acknowledgment of the protests’ peaceful nature.
- No calls for dialogue, no diplomatic visits, no threats of sanctions or cooled relations.
- No warnings about democratic backsliding, no objection to deploying the National Guard against citizens.
Contrast this with recent actions:
- A fiercely condemnatory stance toward Georgia’s government.
- Muted criticism of Turkey during the Istanbul protests.
The pattern? A three-tiered hypocrisy:
- Full condemnation for smaller states (Georgia).
- Tepid murmurs for regional players (Turkey).
- Deafening silence for Western hegemon (USA).
When responses shift this drastically based on geopolitics as opposed to principles, how can the EU claim to champion democracy or rule of law?
It’s less about the size of the state and more about alignment.
The party in power in Georgia is (perceived as being) pro-Russia, so they get full throated condemnation.
Turkey is a member of NATO but openly plays both sides, so they get muted criticism.
The US is the EU’s puppet master, so they get complete silence.
For the Hong Kong protests, China bad but also China is a key player in the world economy, so media and “NGOs” put out drivel while the governments mostly stayed silent or gave weak meaningless condemnations.
If something like this happened in Russia, they would go
Alignment is a big part of it, but Georgian government isn’t exactly pro Russian, they don’t even have diplomatic relations last I looked. They’re just not liberals.
As far as the West is concerned anything short of calling Putin the reincarnation of Hitler is basically pro-Russia, unless they are a key ally (Turkey) or major trade partner (China). “With us or against us”.
yeah basically
it’s not strange, it’s business as usual
the current social contract between the us and the eu is that the eu supports american imperialism as long as the us plays the bad guy and the eu can occasionally act like the moral opposition to suppress any actual opposition
there are also protests in Bulgaria against switching to the euro, I’m guessing the mainstream EU media won’t be reporting on that either
