The first post I viewed (I’m brand spanking new) had an awful troll comment. It was quickly removed, but it was mentioned they’d made comments on six different post before being banned. What protects the community from an instance that let’s anyone join? Hope this was the correct place to post.

If a lot of bad actors seem to originate from a single instance that instance will end up de-federated (unlinked) from the rest of the community, isolating them.

I just saw this site a few minutes ago, in a thread abput self-hosting a Lemmy instance.

Basically there’s already a list of “bad sites”, which will be de-federated from the big instances.

Yyyyup! I’m doing it now! Hello from tucson.social!

Just know that us server owners can add servers to blacklists if they become an issue. Alternatively, we can function on a whitelist only for further security. We can also ban individual user accounts at the server level. At the end of the day, it’s up to the server owner as to what’s allowed and what’s not. Personally, I’ll make sure the community of Tucson has a voice in their instance, so most of that will go to a vote.
