Oh damn, I was expecting this article to go in completely the opposite direction, but this is actually good news! Congrats to all who worked on this.
Ugh. How utterly abhorrent that this phenomenon exists. Big congrats to everyone involved in writing and passing this bill!
I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. I’ve met Gretchen and her daughters on a few very unofficial occasions. She’s polite, gracious, helpful, and gives zero fucks.
There was a podcast that was put out last week where she was promoting her book and swearing her motherfucking ass off like a true Michigander. Legend.
Yep, that’s publicity.
One of my university peers’ family was friends with Medvedev’s (ex. president of Russia, now the most fascistic freak) family. When he was struggling with exams, Medvedev even wrote him a sweet letter to cheer him up.
“The law, which will go into effect later this year, will end the practice of judges or juries acquitting defendants facing assault or murder charges if they successfully argue they were provoked by the victim’s sexual orientation or gender identity.”
Good stuff.
Anyone have a link to the actual bill? Would be interesting to see how this is enforced. A step in the right direction, but how big of a step comes down to that.
Thank you!
Not bad. It should bar obvious, intentional use of the defense, and more subtle uses or insinuations would be tough to cover under any law. Ideally, judges will enforce it as “we’re not getting into this at all unless you can give a good reason that isn’t prejudicial.”
