I’m Schedule A, have a few letters of recommendation, have my resume, and I’m getting my Bachelor’s degree in Communications in one month. I’m Latino or Latina (?) so I guess there’s some DEI service I can utilize.

…I can’t fucking wait. I need a job. I need income. I need a fucking car or transportation. I need to move from this place.

It’s Joever, folks… for Makan, ig? Idk, I had to squeeze in the current lingo there. But as the Joe(ker) himself said, the four-letter word on everyone’s minds is “Jobs! J-O-B-S!” (Yeah, I had to Segway to an old Biden gaffe there, you see).

Anyway, I’m not anti-work, like what they have on that subreddit… and I’ve never exactly been “neutral” on work either.

I’m “pro-work,” if anything. I want a career. I want a job or role I can take pride in. I’m disabled, yes. I’m Autistic, among other things. But gosh darnit to frick (I know, I know, naughty and vulgar language), I need a job. Maybe a union job with LiUNA or whatever. But I need a job.

But for the life of me, I suck at job-hunting.

I’m not sure what details to give to you all, but I need pointers on how to land a job, maybe you can all tell me how you were able to do it (…assuming you did, mind you)?

I just need advice…

Since you’re still pursuing your degree your college’s career services is gonna be the best place to start. Try to land an internship and turn it into a full-time offer. If that doesn’t work if you have a friend that works somewhere you want to work you can have them put your resume into HR for a position that fits your skill set.

The other thing you have to do, which is important, is to make your resume machine readable. There’s websites that do this but another option is to partially fill out an application for a job you don’t want and make sure your resume is parsing correctly. Most resumes are algo filtered now and as dumb as it is not having a machine readable resume is where a lot of people go wrong.

What sort of work are you looking for now?

One thing you could do based on the job you are looking for is tailor your resume depending on what the new job is looking for. It sucks to have to use multiple versions of your resume, but it should help if you can point out things you’ve done that they may value.

      I’ve… heard this trick before.

Yeah, I may have to craft new resumes.

Anyway, I want a Communications job, preferably. Human relations, social media strategy, even secretarial work.

It could also be more of an office job.

Honestly, I’m on usajobs.gov when it comes to government work, but other than Handshake and glassdoor, I’m not sure where else to look.

      • depending on your location and willingness/ability to relocate, state government can be cool. maybe even the state you’re in now!

some are union, the benefits can be alright too. they usually have their own state gov website for postings/application. same with state universities. they are usually cool about accomodations once you are in the door as they have federal compliance requirements to receive federal monies.

just some ideas! job searching is draining AF, but pace yourself and jumping through those institutional hoops can pay off with a chill ass gig sometimes, maybe even one helping the public!

Okay, this is important. I’ll definitely look into this.

    Repost from original comment section:

For the record, I’ve mainly worked associate or retail jobs up to this point.
