“It is important to the president and me that American firms and workers can compete on a level playing field,” Ms. Yellen said. “We have raised overcapacity in previous discussions with China, and I plan to make it a key issue in discussions during my next trip there.”

How much of it was because Japan didn’t have nukes though? China is now clearly the second biggest economy with easily the most competent and advanced military, they have nukes, literaly the 3rd largest stock. Meanwhile we have the entire 20th century pattern of US only starting select imperialist wars against inferior(or perceived as inferior) enemies.
Out of all the narratives, “we need to be extra careful of US nukes” is not the one. Its certainly not even what the DPRK or Russia say/think about it.
It was just a shorthand way of saying the us has a history of violence (warranted and very much not) towards other countries.
