I just find it confusing this news agency would care about the pope, when most of American Christian are Protestants, you know, people who literally “protest” Roman catholic church.

I don’t think many American christians are Roman Catholic, so Pope has no authority to them whatsoever?
Other places exist, but also it’s not even that far from half. About 20% of the total US population identifies as Catholic.
