Some other studio got most of the way through production, then got bought out by Disney. The Walt Disney Company® (DIS) continued funding the project for something like a month, then canned it (methinks tax write off – all cost and no gross; edit: i completly forgot our leading man is romantically involved with another man, and (DIS) executives are either homophobic or scared of what homophobes will do to their bottom line). A subsidiary of Netflix, Inc.® (NFLX)† picked it up on the cheep, wrapped up production, and put it on their steaming service. As far as they’re concerned, it’s just smart budgeting to stretch a cheep acquisition as far as they can. Loss leader!
