At my 20s I just realised how useless YouTube is for me… Only few comedy channels actually gave me anything in return of my time.
I used YouTube for so long mainly with NewPipe client which has become unstable for me. And I no longer feel like dedicating a browser or using invidious to consume it.
I mainly watched tech and comedy channels and podcasts. I do continue listening some podcasts via RSS… Most channels are just advertisements and memes like waste of time…
This post is about how youtube as a platform in just about every way is bad and how I wish I could get the time spent back.
I currently spend lots of time on YouTube, mainly educational channels. I should subscribe to nebula really. YouTube is very good at knowing what I want to watch and that is probably a big reason I am staying.
If you want youtube to feel less addictive, I’d recommend watching through invidious or freetube.
I always wondered how this affected YT/Google? Does it cut out their ad revenue? I can download some videos using NewPipe on my phone and love that…that means using YT less for music. I’ve found a documentary channel (https://topdocumentaryfilms.com/watch-online/) that has YT videos (i assumed they’d be separate from YT) also.
At least, it cuts the ad revenue if you disable ads in your browser. It would be a waste of bandwidth for Newpipe to download ads, so I’m quite confident that they don’t do that. That’s why it’s important to actively support these creators through donations.
I’ve noticed some of my favorites are also uploading onto alternative sites, too.
