I was recently reading about the Young Lords and their hospital occupation in one of the PSL’s publications! I thought this was a pretty cool instance of occupations succeeding and being popular (at least in the sense of mass support).
They occupied a Bronx hospital and were able to get the government to come to the negotiation table. They also staged trash burnings across the city to protest inadequate sanitation.
I don’t know how they are these days, but I thought it was a cool instance of afrolatin history :).
One of the videos is from Democracy Now so bear with me…
That’s amazing! I think they are very brave, and the staging trash burnings was really intelligent on their part! By the way, who is Democracy now?
Mhm! I think it really destroys the narrative that societal disruptions somehow aren’t valid forms of political participation :)
They’re a relatively left news outlet in the US, but of course, they still fall into a lot of the liberal trappings. They notably interviewed the world’s most reputable and loved researcher, Adrian Zenz. You can sorta guess what they think about the Russian - Ukrainian war. I’d put them up there with Jacobin. I do think they’re useful in the sense that they’re not like…CNN, but you just have to exercise a level of skepticism when they talk about certain things like Imperialism especially. Really a hit or miss sometimes.
Ah that’s no surprise, a lot of media that gains traction in the US are often changed or altered to prevent being silenced. They even put in some inaccurate information to keep from being taken off. Happens to many shows, such as Stranger Things. They talked about how the US government uses kids for experiments, then it went full 180 and is now anti-commie. Thank you for telling me about them! I’ll be watching out for them
