I have a friend who says to never update anything in a room until you’re prepared to update the entire room. Because that new area rug will make the walls look bad and the new paint makes the drapes look old and the new surroundings make the furniture look old, lol!
Years ago, I lived in an apt.
A week before moving out, a friend spills their drink on the carpet.
I get some quality carpet cleaner to clean the stain, and the spot is now noticeably much cleaner than the rest of the carpet. Not bleached, actually clean looking.
The apt keeps my deposit and says we ruined the carpet and it needs to be replaced. Non negotiable.
Saying “non negotiable” doesnt actually hold up in small claims, nor against basic resistance in most cases.
Look up your local laws, in some places carpets must be replaced at the expense of the landlord every X years, or if there is any kind of damage (caused by regular wear and tear) that could be a trip hazard. Pictures from move-in, carpets not being replaced when you moved in, etc. all help your case.
Last place i lived, I spent 30 minutes arguing on the phone with my previous landlord over flooring and got my 700 dollars back. Turns out most of the time they only vaguely know the laws they’re quoting, so if you come with confidence, prep, and a willingness to take it to small claims, they’ll fold to save themselves the effort.
Yeah most just feed from scare tactics. Also another tip the more cranky cantankerous means they got real cosy with the fear tactics and likely even partaking illegal ventures. So pushing back means they will bend super easy cuz they don’t want their house of cards to crumble.

My using bleach to remove a stain
Rental trick: be quick and grab a face towel and blot it deeply. Get really in there with the pressure of your fingers to soak it up. Then take a moist one(not dripping) and blot some more. Tends to avoid staining without having to wash it.
Ps: Doesn’t work for blood. But I think you have bigger problems if you’re cleaning blood.
It’s true. If my blood kegs are leaking, it’s going to be expensive to fix.
