Acquaintance was confidently talking about how Sweden is a socialist country. The sad thing is most Americans probably believe this, but dear god it is so over

All the time, and a lot of the time it’s some topic that will make you a pariah for arguing against it, like “the Soviet Union killed gorillions” or whatever.

it doesn’t if you’re normal about politics. the issue that makes people a pariah is when you’re making your politics your entire personality or making edgelord jokes about killing rich people around people who aren’t into that humor. you can totally defend the USSR if you’ve done your research and aren’t just repeating communist memes at people. they might not agree with you but a lot of the time they’ll just walk away thinking you’re wrong and not that you should be shunned from society.

Pretty sure if I defended the USSR to most people I know, even if it was totally factual, they wouldn’t want to have anything to do with me anymore. Ebil Stalin wanted to rule us and all that.

I think human relationships are a lot more complicated than that, hence me bringing up how you’re coming off being as important as what you’re saying. it’s a pretty natural human reaction to hear people out when you actually care about them. i think there’s definite things you could do to make people think you’re a sicko but in most cases i’ve experienced, political discussions usually just end at an impasse where we both think the other is wrong but whatever.

but also, we shouldn’t discount how hard defending the USSR is in this situation bc you have to know what you’re talking about at a much higher level to come off persuasive as the person you’re arguing about is. that’s definitely a problem.
