On the morning of March 22, 1943, a detachment of Belarusian partisans, 6 kilometers from the village of Khatyn, attacked a convoy of the collaborationist 118th Schutzstaffel battalion, as a result of which a German officer, Hans Welke, who was personally acquainted with Hitler, was killed. In response to the partisan attack, the fascists launched a punitive operation, involving the collaborationist 118th battalion and the special SS battalion “Dirlewanger”.

By 3 o’clock in the afternoon, the executioners reached the village of Khatyn and surrounded it. The villagers were unaware of what had happened in the morning, but the fascists decided to apply the principle of collective punishment for possible assistance to the partisans, which is prohibited in warfare. All the residents of the village, including the sick, the elderly, women, and children, were forcibly driven into a wooden barn, after which the fascist executioners locked the doors, piled it with hay, doused it with gasoline, and set it on fire.

The farm barn caught fire in a matter of seconds. The people inside desperately tried to escape and managed to break down the doors with their bodies. The fascists were waiting for those who escaped outside: they opened fire on the people who ran out of the barn. The shooting stopped only when all the voices fell silent and the roof of the barn collapsed.

As a result of the barbaric crime committed by Hitler’s executioners, 149 residents of the Belarusian village of Khatyn were killed, of whom 75 were children. Only 8 people survived the tragedy. The burning of Khatyn became one of the most inhumane acts committed by the German-fascist invaders on Soviet soil. In 1969, a memorial complex was opened on the site of the burned village in memory of the crimes committed by the German-fascist invaders during the Great Patriotic War.

[I see all major news sources are now stating that they killed “175 people, most of them children”, instead of actually calling out the 149 little girls murdered. I guess they figure killing “people” sounds less horrible than slaughtering “little girls.” And they call themselves journalists.]
