Just curious as a non-American, and also with all the reports here I’ve seen about people quitting their jobs in the US. Does it vary by state? What are food stamps - does that mean you can only buy food with them, or is it just a euphemism for unemployment benefits? How much income do you get, and what kind of requirements are put on it - do you have to look for work, can you be kicked off it, etc.? Did it used to better or was it always garbage? Do you get healthcare? Are homeless people on welfare and if not how do they get by?
I’m on welfare in my country. I assume it would be better than it is in the US, which is another reason I’m curious, because I don’t really understand how anyone could be poorer than I am without literally starving to death.
