The fighting during the offensive was so fierce, with some 2,000 American soldiers killed per month, that the US realized defeat was inevitable in Vietnam and that it would have to withdraw from the country, humiliating itself by asking for a peace agreement.
The Tet Offensive was one of the largest military campaigns in the US imperialist genocide in Vietnam. It was a brilliant campaign of surprise attacks by the Vietnamese resistance against US military command and control centers and their puppet mercenaries in the south, which shocked Yankee imperialism and forced it to its knees.
The genius Ho Chi Minh devised a brilliant diversionary strategy to confuse the US and strike it with offensive blows. For a time, he waged a diplomatic campaign offering peace to the US and a ceasefire agreement, only to suddenly launch a massive attack on US special forces on the vital supply route to Saigon. It was all to keep the Yankee troops distracted… Everything was planned. The Tet Offensive took place on January 30, the very day that many imperialist soldiers had leave.
More than 80,000 Vietnamese revolutionary troops attacked in a lightning offensive more than 100 towns and cities occupied by the US and its puppet mercenaries in the south, including 36 of the 44 provincial capitals, 72 of the 245 district cities… and the southern capital, Saigon, resulting in the execution of more than 4,000 Yankee soldiers along with 15,000 more of their southern mercenaries.
The shock to the empire was brutal. At that time, the manipulative Western press reported that Ho Chi Minh was about to be defeated, that the Viet Cong was being crushed, and that the US was winning the war… When the news reached the streets of the US that 4,000 Yankee soldiers had been killed, all the propaganda came crashing down and the population realized that it was all a lie. US politicians were forced to give up if they wanted to win their elections, as the genocide in Vietnam could no longer be covered up.
Despite suffering heavy casualties, the Tet Offensive was a clear strategic victory for the resistance and the Vietnamese People’s Army, marking the beginning of the end of the US genocide in Vietnam.
