    5d is a bit silly, people don’t call pam signaling 2d just because it involves time and signal intensity. 30k writer seems also optimistic. but it would be mega pog, so wish them success and all that in saving cat pictures.

      Writing prompt: And long after the humans had thoroughly extinctified themselves with through silly, frivolous pursuits like “AI data centers” and “shareholder value,” nature had returned itself to a pre-industrial state. Eventually, Felis catus rose to evolutionary prominence, despite their largely decorative brains. They had mastered the solar system, and decided to look inwards towards the Earth. A seemingly alien archive from time immemorial was discovered, buried under countless layers of deep strata. Within the facility, they found a trove of billions upon billions of pictures and videos of their primitive ancestors etched within the structure of silicon crystals.

        Eventually, in their searches of the archives, they came across a curious poem:

        Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,
        An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature;
        Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses
        Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.

        I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
        A singular development of cat communications
        That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
        For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.

        A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
        You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
        And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion,
        It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

        O Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display
        Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.
        And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
        I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

      Yeah, but for something that’s effectively permanent storage that’s not really an issue. I don’t see this being used for day to day stuff, more of long term preservation of important documents.

        I think really the only way this would be a workable solution for most cases would be to use it in a RAID type setup with striping and parity or something similar. That’s just horribly slow and the read-back isn’t a whole ton better either.

          To me this seems like the main use case would be long term archival storage. It wouldn’t be useful for operational data. But like say you just started archiving all the scientific papers, so what if it takes a few years to finish. It’s the end product that counts here.
