In 10 years they managed to ban blackface icon Black Pete from the Dutch holiday Sinterklaas in almost every place in the Netherlands. It wasn’t easy as some of their protests erupted in actual riots and they were under constant threat of the far right. Still, they managed to kick out a racist caricature. I got 1 dutch friend. And that guy has been maintaining for years now that zwarte piets are only black cuz of the chimney ash, you see, and they’re simply the helpers of Sinterklaas. He was (it’s been a while) very pissed that the wokes and immigrants are cancelling zwarte piets. And all this is happening cuz those spoopid immigrants keep misunderstanding dutch culture :( He says he’s not interested in politics and goes on to drop the worst political takes you ever heard.
Either way, do you actually know why Kick Out Zwarte Piet will stop existing?
Because they’re prbly re-organizing… (without the issue of zwarte piete, there is no ‘kick out zwarte piete’ until it re-emerges)
They felt like they achieved at least some sort of awareness among the people, and they are now giving them the responsibility. I don’t know if it is naive, but they have a point. Black Pete got banned almost entirely and we now have July 1st to remember Dutch slavery and all. More can be done, but after 10+ years they have achieved a lot.
