When Ignasi Biosca-Reig heard there were shortages of amoxicillin in Spain, he quickly added shifts at his drug company's factories to boost production of the popular antibiotic. But a few extra shifts was as far as he could go.
Bayer, Pfizer, Boeringer… They’re just as big as ever. Germany and Switzerland still have a strong pharmaceutical industry, Italy has quite a presence as well. Part of the issue is still raw materials supply problems, another part in Germany at least is the high number of job vacancies for educated and qualified people. Investment is also going towards newer production technologies and research/production of higher margin products. The common medications people need just aren’t profitable with the relatively high (and increasing) input costs in western Europe.
