The Khmer Rouge was the genocidal “Maoist” government in Cambodia. Mao supported them against Vietnam. At the same time, Pol pot would later confess he never read communist theory. The Khmer Rouge was also USA-backed

It so weird we often hear how China supported Pol pot never how the US also supported Pol Pot. It’s almost as if its propaganda aimed at attacking communists and equating them with fascists. So if we bring up that the US supported him it doesn’t matter because we’re disseminating mindless propaganda that we know is false. On the other hand had china decided to ally Vietnam against Cambodia, it would be reversed, not only would western propaganda bemoan the plight of the poor khmer rouge, they’d probably build statues to them and spend billions immigrating them to the US.

While that’s true, it doesn’t really answer the question.

it was a result of sino soviet split, the USSR was backing Vietnam, and china was backing Cambodia, everyone wanted a united communist Indochina, but china wanted one allied to them while the USSR viewed it as their last gateway into southeast asia. The khmer rouge evacuated the major cities and made everyone be amish or whatever. The Us then took those numbers of evacuated cities and called them a death toll. so the capitol city had about 1 million people in it and was mostly abandoned afterwards so pol pot kills 1 million makes headlines. Nobody knows how many cambodians were killed in Nixons secret bombing raids of them, yet somehow we have exact numbers of how many people were killed in pol pot jungle prisons. But it really doesn’t matter because mao killed 1 billion chinese people for fun remember? So why is this question even being asked?
