This comes out of nowhere in the article. It is not smartphones per se. It is the social media kids access that does it, and no wonder, we all know how insane that is for an adult mind.

While probably not possible on this scale of a study, they should have looked how much % of phone use was social media, and I am sure they’d have found a correlation between all the negatives they listed and the amount of social media they consumed.

That also means taking away smartphones is no use here if kids can access the same social media via computers.

Youtube/Google/Alphabet out of aaaaall the companies out there, should already have a mindblowing amount of info on 99% of its users. There’s no need at all to even ask for ID.

I’d make the distinction between paid app and subscriptions. I think most people don’t mind paying once for something. But every single thing is nowadays a subscription model, it’s ridiculous.

Skill issue

That is exactly my usecase. Especially during the week the server is used only in the morning and in the evening. It is not accessible outside my home wifi either. So the drive is sleeping like 20 hours a day instead of running needlessly.

My first thought behind this was also wear of the drive but seems like that is a small issue. Cost of electricity is however another one, but to be fair I never calculated that. Might be less than in your case but still money spent on something not being used.

Let’s wait and sew how that’s supposed to work. Inb4 you have to verify yourself as experienced user to be able to do this…

E-mail seems a divisive topic on that though. You find either people who say, selfhosted my mail for 4 decades already, never ran into issues! While the other end of the spectrum is not to ever ever eeever try selfhosting e-mail, it is not worth it.

To be fair though, the exact same thing can happen to you on gmail too. They are not unknown to immediately block your account if something flags it to them and getting a quick response there is not a given either.
