I’ll have you know, here in the US, people that are donning the American flag have been a sign of nationalistic fascism since at least the late 90s/early 2000s. At least no later than the inception of the Tea Party.

Firefox had some major memory leaks when Chrome first launched (2008). It became noticeable with the more tabs you had and the longer the browser was opened. This was also during the days for consumer systems with 16GB max RAM & 32GB on higher end enthusiast systems.
We also have to remeber that this was 10 years before Google removed their “Don’t be Evil” motto, and there was still a great deal of trust that had been earned by tech professionals.
So when Chrome came in, had a minimalist UI (for the time) and was light weight and memory light without any obvious memory leaks, it was a performance boost for a toooon of users.
Chrome has since become a memory hog and is now being developed and pushed by a company that has become heavily enshittified & evil. Firefox has become lightweight, memory efficient, and is an FOSS product that’s not evil and enshittified making it the right choice in 2024, but is going to be an uphill battle that hopefully more tech professionals move to as Manifest V3 becomes a reality.
I switched off of Firefox because of those memory leaks. I remeber when it hit the tech news circles when the community contributer that was frustrated with them went in and fixed two of the biggest culprits.
Then I just didn’t bother til somewhat recently. For the most part, it’s great and does what ilI want/need. Biggest complaint is that some UX overhauls are needed for Mobile FX, especially around tab management.
Just so anybody less technically saavy sees this (I know, I know, this is lemmy), this won’t break shit.
If this worked, CSV would have been dumped ages ago. The standard supports column value commas when the delimieter is set to a comma by… You won’t believe this… Putting the column value inside of double quotes. And any modern scripting/programming language can handle this with builtin libraries, including Bash.
And honestly, I’ve always wondered why it’s called CSV when the standard is actually Delimieter Seaparted Values.
No, what I mean is that salary guarantees you get @ least 40 hours of pay (assuming salaried full-time). If you show up for work and they send you home, as a salaried employee you still get paid. Or if you finish the alloted work for the week early, you still get paid for 40.
After all of that is when non-exempt comes into play with OT pay according to federal & state regulations and any contract guarantees that go above those regulations.
Salary non-exempt guarantees you’re paid at least the 40 hours a week + overtime.
I’d push back and say that this is a terms of contract change and get your peers to do the same.
Edit: I wouldn’t be surprised if they do this and start reducing hours for various reasons. And from there it’s reduction in benefits duce to not hitting certain hours. It’s a pattern that’s been seen in various industries before.
This article has such a negative tone for Valve coming in and continuing to fix pain points in a feature/service in a complex ecosystem.
Feedback:
Format your README better. And don’t be a condescending jerk and say “wikipedia is your friend”. If you can’t explain what you’re doing here we’re going to question your solution. You don’t have to write a white paper, but enough to show you actually understand the concept enough to explain it in brief then you provide links to detailed refefences.
Comment your code. Meaningful names are great, but you should be explaining complex concepts and algorithms within your code. This provides clear intent to people using and maintaining your code if implemented directly.
TBH, I never dug into rational wiki. However the timeline is fairly accurate from what I watched what happened to my friends both in the game industry and my former friends that were gamers (hint, i worked in games when this shit was unfolding).
Unfortunately, no other “timeline” source exists, with Wikipedia starting its paragraphs of history with Zoe Quinn creating Depression Quest, and many many other articles starting there as well. Some people like to attribute a slightly earlier event of a handful of journalists critiquing gamers over their reactions to the Mass Effect 3 ending, but that doesn’t really fit with how quickly things snowballed after “The Zoe Post”.
I stand against gamergate buddy.
Your timeline of events and triggers are off though.
https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Timeline_of_Gamergate
I vividly remeber this time period and witnessing these events unfold live. I lost a good deal of people I considered friends at the time due to the misogyny that rose out.
You’re right though, gamergate followers were radicalized by what we now know as the “Alt-right”.
Gamergate started with “The Zoe Post”, not the removal of jailbait.
“The Zoe Post” is a hit piece from an Ex-boyfriend of game developer Zoe Quinn that alleged that she slept with a notable game reviewer to get positive reviews for her game. Said reviewer never actually reviewed her game.
Please don’t re-write the history of these events. Especially since jailbait had been removed for around a year when “The Zoe Post” dropped.
I mean, you could have easily searched “how much do feet sweat per day” and verified this yourself.
But ok, here’s one of hundreds of the results from podiatry clinics that say roughly the same thing.
Feet sweat. A lot. Like a pint (450g) of sweat a day or more if particularly active or you have larger feet.
So for me, daily at the least. On particularly active days, multiple times.
Good ol Tech-Company doing all the tech things.
How did Gabe Newell offend you?
The dude has been a bastion of how to run a company that delights its end-users and doing their best to run a company ethically. A staunch group of people that believe in right-to-repair as well as believing in modding and community growth of games.
Yes there’s issues on the publisher/developmer side of things, however Valve constantly works with studios to help mitigate these pain points and on-board to their platform.
Didn’t you know? That was J.R.'s fault and nobody else on the board was involved in the decision. And since he’s been forced to step down retiring due to the backlash, the person responsible is gone! Nobody else is to blame! /s
I’ve worked in games on-and-off-and-on for the last 20 years and have over 12 years of actual industry experince. The industry needs to change, and there’s a few studios and publishers standing up and trying to do things in a better way. But dammit, I don’t think it’s going to get much better as an entire industry until there’s significant reform to the US’s business practices as a whole.
Also, fuck publicly traded companies. They ways go to hell within 5-10 years.
To resell them on Amazon for $4.99 a pop to rubes that don’t buy a box on AliExpress for $4.99
I just wish it was an either/or situation.
I don’t always need my lawn mower/blower/weed trimmer on batteries. I wish I could easily plug them in when doing light dut work close to the house. But then they couldn’t tie me into their battery ecosystem as easily.
