The first item on your list should have been to try Gimp ?
Libreoffice suite allows you to export any document in pdf. Libreoffice Draw I use to edit pdf content. PdfArranger is a very nice tool to change the structure of a pdf (like adding a pdf file to an existing pdf, or deleting pages, you see all the pages at once on the screen and can see the content when you zoom, very intuitive). When I need to add signatures or raster pictures with transparency, I open the required page on Gimp and “File->Open as layer” the picture. Usually it works with Draw directly.
I have been working several years like this and it is pretty much a no-brainer now.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux is awesome at home, but aren't y'all forced to use Windows at work?Français
2·2 months agoYes you are right, usually linux users that are not in IT have no choice but using bad microsoft computers (or Apple for designers/upper upper management) when they are employees.
But if you are general manager, or an independant contractor, you do whatever you want, and I have been on Debian, Void since 3 years now and it is just great.
People complain that “your files are not compatible” (i.e.: their excel version can not open a moderately complex xlsx file), and you use stupidly dumb webapp for Outlook and Teams, but otherwise if you don’t need to commit for a specific software (built for windows or mac, like Adobe suite, 2D or 3D CAD softwares, some kind of old school ERP or CRM), you are all good. Basically everything done by management staff can be done using LibreOffice.
The “cloud revolution” at least has given us this good result : you can have basic business utilities solved through a webclient, hence GNU/Linux OS is ok to work with.
Antix , a debian, should be a good one for you. Base configuration is good, you may have issues with wifi connecting on startup, but otherwise it is enjoyable.

Programming@programming.dev•How exactly does one get better at programming?Français
3·5 months agoSelf taught Python (and using linux OS) over the last 15 years ; the only ways I found real progress in my code/coding were while doing the following : 1/ (at start): following strictly a “school manual” with lessons and ALL exercices. It was Python 2.3 I think, a manual (in French) by Swinnen. To be honest I stopped before reaching the GUI and network programming, and guess at what I suck today in Python programming … 2/ projects, personal projects. I did pro (paid) projects on the side, but with the impetuous to deliver results to be paid, I can not progress. On personal projects I can take the time to try stuff, to rewrite functions or programs, and to “improve” existing code with new/better coding constructs.
So here I am with a rather random level of Python programming proficiency, currently being average at most but enough proficient to have workable programs.

A lot of stories by Jack Vance (The Demon Princes saga, the Giant Planet, the Tschai Cycle, …) are space opera but nothing about spaceship and battles in the stories

It did not work for me either. Savage Worlds is not adapted to gunfighting in my opinion, and my players were also more demanding regarsing horse riding stuff… Still looking for a good replacement, but nothing is available from the shelf it seems
What is a better choice for python dev please ?
Using void linux because it has no systemd init system (it uses its own “runit” init system) ; and it is a natutal development after using Debian for a long time and wanting to understand more about gnu/linux system.
Also, it is very reliable with a lot of packages. It is standard enough so using info from arch, debian or other distro works.
But the origin was I could not understand how systemd was managing the system and it felt really contrived to go around it, so I began using void and that’s the story.

Buy European@feddit.uk•How is Libre office nowadays? Is it a decent replacement to Microsoft Office?Français
1·1 year agoThere is no “import/export” process, you just open it and it works. It fails sometimes for docx, but only for the fancy page layouts (like if you want a full page background image for your company official documents ; or if an ass overloads tables in the file). Even if it fails the document shows up with all the text, it is just the layout that will be different.

1·1 year agoCompatibilty, stability, pdf export and import is all very good. Calc has no real differences with Excel for my use cases (less automated formatting options) Impress is a little lagging behind powerpoint in terms of compatibility and formatting option (this may nag you if you have to use templates from other people). Otherwise I have no issues working with LO on Linux in full Windows Office 365 coworkers

I am working on a dice expression evaluator on my side, and I will certainly reuse your code if I can ! Thanks for giving the example, as a GNU enthusiast, it is very nice ! Great job making it work !

Thank you ! I have this with a gaming keyboard too, good to know what it is called :)
