  • I don’t agree with the assertion that fake reviews don’t benefit them, but I may be missing something. Reviews help drive consumer behavior and more reviews lead to more sales from those who are unable or unwilling to be more discerning. (Amazon takes a cut)

For others, it the idea or presence of fake reviews might drive them to a “trusted” Amazon Basics alternative, also leading to sales with a higher margin for Amazon.

Additionally, recycling listing ASINs is a common tactic that Amazon could stop and is a source of “fake” (or at least, irrelevant in content and misleading in score) reviews. There’s minimal enforcement of rules for review integrity, such as verified purchases or quid pro quo “warranties” and “free gifts” for 5 star reviews.

All the evidence I see points to Amazon preferring the status quo.

  • But also, I just need a break, and more generally I need to feel safe.

I know the feeling intimately. I truly wish that for you. I hope you can get what you need to help you function in this fucked society.

Thanks for sharing your process, it appears very efficient. I’m just grasping at straws, but do you think there’s an interview coach (one that works specifically with autism would be amazing, if they exist) that could work with you? Would a recruiter be able to help? I’m guessing there are fees associated, which is not real helpful when you’re unemployed.

The thing that helped me the most is recognizing that the interviewers are not necessarily looking for the most technically competent, they’re looking for people who can sit in the hierarchy without threatening it. In general, that doesn’t align with an autistic brain. But I’m also high masking, which may not apply to you and will unfortunately likely make it more difficult to exist in a neurotypical-dominant world. I also started with a very low demand job and kept building interpersonal skills and mechanisms to cope with being autistic.

Though I’ve also been dealing with massive burnout for the last 3-5 years, so I’m probably not the paramount example of a successful, long term strategy. Ultimately, I’m continuing to look at entrepreneurship as a sustainable path.

  • I started using a lot of the same open-source tools that are on Linux as replacements in Windows to ease the transition. As someone else mentioned, most of the top projects strive to match the workflows of traditional Windows options. Some lemmy instances have huge posts of top tier open source alternatives to most things you need and somethings you don’t.

  • I was on Mint and primarily using Lutris, but tried many different WINE runners. I would have tried Ubuntu, which I think is a little closer to upstream updates, but I only had a 4gb USB stick to install from. For games, I tried Horizon: Zero Dawn (which I finally got to open, but it was running 0-3 FPS), Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, and Baldur’s Gate II (which seemed to work). I’m not giving up forever, my next gaming tower will likely run linux of some type. I do lots of self-hosting on a Ubuntu PC, so I’m pro-Linux. Just ran out of patience with the laptop!
