    While it is a good quote and true to some extent, it oversimplifies the situation of the population of Germany during the Nazi regime. It was not indifference that kept people who disagreed with Hitler quiet, it was terror. The Gestapo and SS were the most important factors that allowed Hitler to keep the population in check.

    Ask yourself, would you speak up against Nazis in a mostly democratic country we live in today? Without doubt I assume. Would you speak up if it means that the next day uniformed men come knocking at your door and you and your entire family disappears, like it happened to the Schmids 2 Houses down the road?

    The main threat is military -like groups who have the authority to quiet dissidents and spread fear.
