Frankly, complaints about Israel on this exact front have been plentiful for decades. Their settlers, artillery, white phosphorous bombs and so forth, all have been targeting civilians for as long as I can remember, and are clearly documented at doing so in the last few days as well. It feels like everyone rushing to condemn only Hamas has just gotten their first dose of this conflict this week - there isn’t a “good guy” side here, period (besides of course, the actual innocent civilians being killed on both sides).

Still ended up in the situation where a big chunk of Ireland wanted to stay with the British and became “Northern Ireland”. That still seems so strange to me, although I get how people would be derascinated like that.

But, if nothing else, proves that independence for an oppressed people is a gigantic step in the right direction. Israel’s always reasoning that it would present an “existential threat” and all this, but somehow I think keeping a population in an open air prison isn’t making them more friendly.

The “human shields” reasoning has been circulating for at least a decade. “Look, we had to kill the civilians, the militants were hiding behind them!” I don’t know on what planet that reasoning is supposed to be acceptable.

Forget about consistency, this is just flat out incorrect. You’re trying to equate two different distinct sets of people, one of which contains the other.

Group A (superset) includes Bob, Alice, Sue, Mike, Cole, Anthony, Tony, Joanna, and Jerry.

Group B (subset #1) includes Bob, Alice, Sue, Mike. They voted for Anthony to run group A and received a majority, so Anthony assumed power.

Group C (subset #2) includes Anthony, Sue, Mike, and Joanna. They form a government and military over/of group A. They kill a bunch of people.

Group C is NOT EQUAL TO group A. Period. No argument, no “but what if”, they are two different groups. Note that Cole, Tony and Jerry (group D) are flatly not represented in any way by the actions of group C.

I am not “going out of my way to play the persecuted martyr”, I opened the Lemmy home page and “post trashing vegans” was post #3. I thought I left this shit behind when I left reddit, but now it’s here too.

Not using animal products is not exhausting. I’ve done it for a decade and it’s a remarkably easy change where 99% of the difficulty comes from the wider society being hostile to it.

It is an ethical position based on an actual reality of animal agriculture causing vast suffering that we have chosen to opt out of supporting. It is absolutely reasonable and selfless to advocate for the rights of others at a minor, negligible personal sacrifice. It is not a sign of a need to shame others, a need to be a martyr, or any other personality defect that you’re going to project on vegans based on a stereotype despite knowing NOTHING about any of us as individuals. Nobody is trying to make you “feel ashamed”, we are pointing out objective facts about how the animal ag industry causes harm to animals, and then people like you, like you’re doing in this comment, right here, launch into this whole frigging diatribe about how vegans are shaming you and judging you and have a god complex and should just shut up and go back into their corners, because god forbid anyone should ever suggest that anything you’re doing is less than perfectly ethical.
