Thanks, I was aware of the model F project but didn’t realize they had anything other than very large layout options. I have 4 original model M’s, (two are broken), but my desk is too small with my work and personal computers. (I tried a keyboard switch, but I gave up using it after typing to the wrong computer one too many times)
They use your standard Chinese cherry clone switches. Better than the rubber dome keyboards everyone gets by default, but nothing like a genuine model M. (the other reply linked to a model F which is likely better than the M but I wasn’t aware of that option until now so I’ll have to try it)
I wish I could get one in a 60% layout. My desk is too small for my big ones.
Sounds liked expected numbers given the expected life of bridges. if you replace them at end of life there will be no issues.
Go into the industry? Market research? Lots of options but none easy
You also need to add insulation and then do something to hide the ugly layer lines.
The smart people thinking about construction know the real problems and are working on them. The people commenting here mostly don’t know what those issues are.
That is the other thing - there are already a lot of smart people thinking about it and making changes.
The people saying this know nothing about construction or what innovations are needed. Humans have been building housing for thousands of years and we have learned a lot over that time. Anyone asking for a technological overhaul generally doesn’t even know what we have learned and so is just going to make mistakes (sometimes deadly - there are many ways a house can kill) that someone in the industry would avoid. Generally they come up with something that costs more while being worse because they have no idea where the real problems are and so didn’t optimize it.
That is about 10% from leagacy sources. I wouldn’t callethat little.
Do you really need all that? Is there a local copy shop (often public libraries, drug stores…) that have some of those services? Sometimes they have better quality printers (photo printers for example). While you pay more per page, do you really do whatever it is enough to make it worth the cost of the printer vs just going elsewhere? There are many middle grounds (black and white printer. Use your phone camera as a scanner) that are clearly worse than what you want, but still good enough for most purposes and you can use the better option when you need it.
The answer to the above of course depends on your specific situation so there isn’t one right answer. It is always work thinking about though.
It wasn’t clear that windows 95 would beat OS/2, and OS/2 was clearly the better so I installed that over windows 3.1. Then in college I got introduced to BSD. I still prefer BSD, but sometimes linux has things that BSD doesn’t so I use linux in places.
They have been building a lot though, many lines are supposedeto open. If they are enough is an open question of course.
They could plan and build a few more lines in the next few years if they wanted, but it requires vision and such that we don’t see in the us so they won’t. it is still possible.
Are you looking to get into it because you want a good keyboard that feels good; or do you want to get into it because you like the idea of weird layouts, building your own keyboard, trying different switches, weird color schemes, custom key shapes, or all the other interesting but not typing things you can do. Nothing wrong with that second group, even though you can probably tell from my tone that I don’t see the point myself (if this is you I can’t give good advice so stop reading).
