  • Yeah you’re correct I misspoke there. I’m not an expert but others are suggesting her invention wasn’t used in GPS at all, which the guy’s dad is credited with inventing. If that’s true that’s still a little weird, of course I don’t have a problem with her getting credit for anything she invented. I certainly haven’t invented anything

Like I feel like your perspective sounds nice and empathetic for about three seconds, then you realize you’re advocating another ethnic cleansing in response to ethnic cleansing. Or not, I guess it’s possible to think ethnic cleansing is good.

I can’t help but think your framing is a little off. It’s more like someone stole the item, then gave it to their kids, who gave it to their kids, who gave it to their kids, who gave it to their kids, who sold it to someone else, who gave it to their kids. And then asking those kids to give up the item (in this case their property and home?).

I do just need to point out that the Doomsday Clock is run by a media organization with no ties to any government. There’s no hard facts about what the number represents, it’s just a small group of academics who decide how close we are to apocalypse off vibes. While I think the problems they point out are valid concerns you have to remember that their main thing is to drive clicks. Of course this is easier if you’re constantly scared.

I know it seems like we’re in the worst time possible, but crime and violence is as low as it’s ever been and the standard of living for human life in general is also as high as it’s ever been. I’d echo the other commenters, sounds like it’s time for a social media detox.

  • To be clear here, when I say “reason” I mean the fundamental capability humans have to use logic, rationality, and data to make decisions and inform their behaviors. If this is the understanding you had when you wrote your comment I suppose we just disagree fundamentally, and that’d be an exceptional take on the matter.

We can be both emotionally and logically intelligent creatures, the two aren’t mutually exclusive and reducing people to their base emotional responses takes away from their agency. In my experience people are typically much more reason-based in their decision-making, even people who are victims of the term “unreasonable woman”. We don’t go around doing things just because.

  • How far do you take this perspective? As a lefty that doesn’t sound like a very leftist take, rather it sort of completely eschews the principles of solidarity and reason-based argumentation…

I do agree that feminism is about helping women (and that’s great!), but should mothers not advocate for better mental health resources for their sons? Should I not advocate for better access to birth control for the women in my life because I’m male or for Ukrainian liberty because I’m not Ukrainian? Denying someone access to public discourse about a topic because they’re not suffering the consequences of the topic seems a bit silly to me. And of course, men do actually suffer under patriarchy, albeit in a different way than women obviously.
