You should probably look up how most of your rice and beans are grown overseas.
Right. We all know Steam Deck is running on Arch. And also that Steam previously did publicly release SteamOS for awhile (Debian based). So hopefully one day soon they get ballsy enough to push a new/modern official linux build and profit. They haven’t even taken the old links to the SteamOS builds down. I mean c’mon!
Admit to not reading the whole article but does this mean they’re finally going to officially release SteamOS 3 for desktops? Or am I stuck with hacky ports from the Steam Deck?
Went immediately to see if Why Files has done an episode on this one yet. Nope. Now I hit their discord to request one!
Oh yeah it’s totally fucked. I spent a fair amount of time in South America and when locals expressed to me they wanted “what we have” (in North America) I’d go into great detail about how every dumpster behind every grocery store was locked behind razor wire with thousands of pounds of edible food and people who couldn’t afford to rent an up(per)scale place would get fucked with and arrested for trying to live off the grid on the outskirts of town. They literally couldn’t believe that a culture so wealthy would treat their people like that, but it makes sense that none of these elements of our culture made it into the Hollywood content they were consuming at the time.
In most parts of the world if you need to build a fuckin shack to keep the rain off yourself and your family you just do it. Like our species has done for literally tens of thousands of years, naturally.
This was pre mainstream Internet, so I think a lot of those veils have finally been lifted with all of this information sharing. Good.
“Nobody wants to work anymore!”
This is a new term for me… I’ve been one of tens of thousands of the “motorhomeless” (living out of vehicles) 3 times in the last 4 years. I managed to keep my wfh/remote job through it all. In two of the three displacements I was "landlords use"d out of my housing and couldn’t find anything in my price range (even while I make good money) because I have dogs, and refuse to pay 60% or more of my income to keep a roof over my head.
I’m coming from an early adulthood of being an actual street addict and NFA wanderer. The atmosphere out there over the past decade is extremely different than it was 20+ years ago.
I feel like more people should read The Grapes of Wrath because that’s kinda what’s coming if things don’t let up. The class war is palpable and sometime soon those going without may actually outnumber the haves and all these landlord capitalist class assholes are gonna feign surprise that their starving workers aren’t more grateful for the leftovers they’re thrown over the fence while the pinkertons burn down their shacks and then jail (and kill) them for “vagrancy” (those laws are still on the books btw).
Good times.
It’s the whole West Coast. BC Canada is about to elect conservatives who are going to push through mandatory or “involuntary” treatment for addicts and people with “mental health issues” and by that they mean poor people who are visibly struggling to find housing to be weird and do drugs in. They’re not going to send their alcoholic and neurodiverdent friends and family to jail as long as they don’t suffer publicly. It’s only for the homeless and the working poor living out of vans and motorhomes and tents because they’ve been priced out of the fucking rental market by short-term rentals and tourists and small boom economies of scale.
Who knew that making basic human needs into luxury items would displace huge swaths of society. Idk… I learned about shelter being one of the basics in grade school… But obviously it’s not profitable to make sure everyone has their needs met.
Windscribe also still has port forwarding.
When extreme climate collapse really kicks in, the average person will wish it were some protesters disrupting their commute for a few hours on a weekday vs literal breakdown of infrastructure and society indefinitely.
You’ll find that with any major VPN. The IP addresses they use to proxy your traffic eventually get flagged and blocked by lots of major players. Which is why VPN companies cycle through them quite often. As others have said, you’ll either need to switch servers (and thus ips) or figure out another path.
I don’t use mull but most have a way to exclude a given url or site from the tunnel if you need it. i.e. the site will work for you but it’s coming from your own IP and unencrypted.
I set up Bunsenlabs on both of my elderly parents computers and then basically automated login stuff to the sites they use, pinned those tabs. Blocked all ads and trackers. Set Firefox to auto open on boot. Basically made them a Linux version of a chrome book where everything they need is in the browser and already active, no mudding around.
8 months later zero complaints from either of them.
Thanks, now I understand. NGL I have and will again make comments like that when any number of people die (I’m not proud of that, it’s just a fact) but I probably wouldn’t do it so publicly. I’m also not a public figure. Is saying something dumb like this on his part enough to disregard the real work he’s doing? I’m not convinced.
I watch a lot of John Oliver so frankly this particular tweet looks pretty tame to me. 🤷
Again, I don’t know what you’re referring to. I can tell you feel strongly about whatever it is. If you want to explain it better and get me on board with it you’ll need to add some context around who this person is and why what Ken said about them is problematic.
The work I’ve seen him crush is putting in endless FOIAs to expose massive wrongdoing at all levels of government and he doesn’t seem to pull any punches on whether it’s the right or the left fucking around or finding out, and I value that. But I’m still not hip to everything he says or does regards whom, and I’m not enough of a fanboy to drop what I’m doing right now to go down that particular rabbit hole. I do know he left the intercept over enshittification, on principal, which for a writer is a very risky but awesome and empowering move if it works out for him.
I don’t know who Raisi is nor am I following Ken so closely that I’m aware of everything he says or does. Also I’m not the crass comment police.
From what I’ve seen he does good work. I don’t think there’s ever been a public figure who doesn’t fuck up once in awhile, and if there is they’re a fucking liar or good at hiding their flaws.
Klip is awesome. I’m so glad he went out on his own to do what he does best.
The person said they’d pray for you because they thought you were a dumpster diver i.e. that you were gonna eat out of the trash so that’s what happened there. And so… It was also probably just a bag of food waste going gnarly.
It’s actually really funny to me that a cop has to go look in the funky bag. That’s a better use of their time than a lot of things they get up to of a day. Nice one!
I read somewhere awhile back their platinum donors gave a certain tier (10k or 100k or whatever it was). To be clear I’m more than open to being surprised here, I want Ladybird to succeed. I just resent Shopify being involved in any way, I’m a little bit petty after slogging it out at that company awhile because I know what they’re all about.
I’ve used wi-fi calling fairly extensively mostly because I’ve lived in areas where there was zero cell service but ready access to internet (via Starlink or other wireless forms of it). One thing I do know is that my phone co. requests that I fill out a form specifying where I am living currently (whilst using it) so that if I ever need to contact emergency services they’ll have a better idea of where to route the call to. For instance my phone number originates from Western BC but I could potentially be using wi-fi calling from anywhere in the province. I mention this to say, it appears my telco doesn’t have a way to triangulate me with this service.
I can further attest that wi-fi call & text reception still works fine when I have a VPN running on the router that my mobile device is connecting to. Make of that information what you wish.
Though that I have read that wi-fi calling is atrocious for privacy reasons that I have not followed up on. Given the above I’m not sure how or why that would be the case, but basically if I’m in an area with cell coverage I turn it off. I’ve always meant to look deeper into how or why it might be bad (or worse) in some way.
