Leaving the really ancient machines aside - for most tasks you really don’t need the newest tech. At home i am running a Core2Quad system with 8 GB DDR2 RAM and its absolutely fine under Linux or other free OSes. Webbrowsing even with a ton of tabs open is no problem, many games from the repositories are still running absolutely fine and for office stuff this system would still be overkill. Hell, would i switch out the old Nvidia GPU for something remotely newer even current versions of Blender would just work.

The thing the Fedora guy is proposing sounds… sane to me. Just another question when you create a user, another config file and a daemon that answers yes / no if asked if a user is of a certain age.

I think this is what they really want. Perhaps it will come with the introduction of Windows 12, of course all for your “safety”.
But luckily there is still a giant supply of old(er) computers out there that will happily run under Linux / BSD.

Hey, he might not be lying… technically. I mean, wasn’t it Israeli planes who flew the first attacks?
The SS did, in its early days, surely have high standards regarding fanaticism and race purity but later on lowered their expectations dramatically… if not on paper then at least in practice.
Those people in my family were not bad people, at least later in life I would categorize then as good men, but opportunism led them join horrible institutions.
The same justification was made by my grandfather for joining the SA and for another two members of my extended family for joining the SS. Honestly, that is exactly what they said when I confronted them as old men.

Well… don’t live in rogue nations then, I guess?

Yeah, right… fuck them.

Yeah, here… I am a jack of all trades, general purpose computer guy at a small company which also includes development. Haven’t and will never use that abomination.

I also have claimed over some years that my old car was conscious… and that it hates my guts, perhaps it was really true, the new owner never had problems with it, who knows?

Sooo… what about telling those people that they should learn to use the right tool for the job?

No, but who needs that in a chat? For that you can use something like Jitsi.

IRC
Its mature, it can handle a bazillion users and is really lightweight. And with a nice front-end like “The Lounge” it can also look fancy.
Looks like the perfect domain for Awk in my eyes…
“Reach more people” is what makes great software… less great. I mean: The moment you target a wide population you have to make concessions to the mainstream taste, balance difficulty more and so on.
The Fediverse is not like email, it’s more like the various BBS networks of the 80s: Tons of anarchy, chaos, StarTrek, politics, lunacy, StarTrek… and cool as hell.
Please keep it this way.

Perhaps a bit oldschool and not really sophisticated, but: A big harddisk with a somewhat sophisticated folder structure…

What about… yes, of course!?
If civil war is inevitable, you coward Americans could already grab the guns you are oh so proud of and start using them
