  • “It’s driving people insane, ten- to twelve-hour days, nineteen days in a row,” said Voss, a senior steward. “It’s exhausting people, to the point we’ve had people pass out at work.”

Starting pay at Everett is around $19, while nearby Seattle’s minimum wage is $19.95. “There’s a retailer right across the street from one of the factories that says ‘We’ll pay you more than Boeing,’” said Voss.

Now, all the problems Boeing are having lately make sense. They’ve cut absolutely everything to the bone to increase shareholder value at the cost of the stability of their company. The lax safety standards are just a symptom of a much larger problem.

  • The problem is that US politics presents a binary choice. The Democrats are providing military aide to Israel while trying to push a ceasefire and getting Hamas 100% on board with the terms until Netanyahu changed them unilaterally.

Meanwhile, Trump thinks Israel is not genociding hard enough and needs to wipe out the Palestinians faster.

Third options don’t exist in American politics. The lone third party candidate that got any traction campaigned on being more pro-Israel than the other two. It’s the reality on the ground in America.

  • The events of the last year have made it crystal clear to me that the lives of people from certain parts of the globe—not only from Sudan, but also from Gaza, Congo and so many other conflict zones of the Global South—are deemed entirely disposable. That the world will look back to Rwanda and say, ‘how could we let it happen?’ and yet stand by as it happens again, and again, and again.

It’s not that people in the West don’t care, necessarily; it’s that those with wealth and influence keep stories from the region out of the news, or at least sufficiently under-covered, that popular anger and a demand for action never materialize.
