    First Listen:

    I’m doing active listening as part of my practice, I really need to be doing this everyday if I want to get good.

    Song opens with some weird pseudo-latin thing, not sure what it is. Philly Joe jones is doing some weird machine gun thing on the hihat. Sam Jones is playing the same rhythm but it feels super syncopated because the bounce between notes.

    They hit the head and Philly accidentally? goes into a two feel. I like that PJJ made it seem like it was on purpose by ending the phrase. The switch between the two-feel and ride is seemless, no time is lost. Bill Evans is playing block chords, which is apparently when you put chords under the melody.

    I like Bill Evans is phrasing the melody, some parts are quieter than others.

    Solos:

    Bill evans first few choruses are just him playing with ideas.

    1:37 is when they start digging in.

    I love the ideas Bill Evans comes up with.

    Philly joe trades with bill, he starts playing some really simple quarter note ideas.

    Philly loves to smack the one at the beginning of his trading.

    On the third trade, he mutes the cymbals which seems like something he doesnt do often.

    I feel like this isn’t Phillys most impressive offering but that’s good because us mortals need something to transcribe.

    On the head out Philly is using the bass drum to match the melody.

    The pseudo-latin thing comes back in. I wonder what it’s supposed to be.

    Second Listen:

    The hi-hat barks seem to be on 1 and 4.

    I wonder if he played that two feel because what he was playing before? It logically makes sense.

    Press roll crescendo into the chorus, swaggers in some notes before playing time.

    I still feel like Philly Joe Jones ride beat feels like it’s accenting 1 and 3. Sometimes he’ll double up on the ride pattern beat.

    All good ride beats have a strong pulse, good flow and pushing ahead. I don’t think there are players who have a plodding or heavy beat and I think these attributes are useful when trying to learn other peoples ride cymbal sound.

    That second trading idea is so musical.

    I don’t like the ride cymbal mutes on the third.

    Fifth, ba boom ba boom ba boom ba boom.

    I like Philly orchestration on the head, like he uses the open hi hat a lot.

    Third Listen:

    I didn’t know Philly Joe Jones was a tap dancer when he was a kid.

    I’m going to get bored if I just do the same listening everyday, so I’m going to watch/listen to one of these everyday too. There’s a playlist of a hundred of these.
