  • I posted this comment on a similar topic a while ago, for context it was replying to someone who wanted to pick 2 LeGuin novels to read to essentially get a survey of her work. I’ve liked her standalone novels as well, but I see them get less discussion generally. I think her work that I see referenced most often is the short story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas.

LeGuin is one of my favorite authors. I’ve read a lot, but not all of LeGuin’s novels. She has 2 main multibook series that I’ve read, the Earthsea books and the Hainish cycle.

Earthsea is sort of YA fantasy, but grows up throughout the series. The first 3 are a self contained trilogy, and my favorite is Tombs of Atuan which is book 2, I think would be okay as a standalone title. My other favorite is Tales from Earthsea which is book 5, and is a collection of short stories set in the setting. You’d be missing a little context only reading Tales, but this could also be a standalone.

The Hainish cycle is scifi, and are only loosely connected by the setting and don’t have a too firmly established chronology, or any shared main characters. My favorite from the Hainish Cycle is The Left Hand of Darkness and my 2nd favorite is The Dispossessed.

  • I buy books that I have already read if I would like to: have one around, reference, reread, recommend/loan/give, or to start conversations.

If a book was important to me intellectually or emotionally, just having a copy around and just noticing it occasionally reminds myself of whatever was important about it, and that can be valuable to me.

    Yeah, I’m playing

    spoilers

Dark Urge, and the strange Ox seems to be in a similar situation, so I would like to follow their plot thread too. I think I know what’s up with it, but still.

I might play around with that a little bit. Hotfix 8 seemed to change the behavior slightly for me, and cause the ooze not to appear immediately, but still fairly soon.

    Edited for spoiler tag weirdness

  • Yeah this is getting a bit frustrating. I might look into reverting to patch 2 hotfix 6 this weekend, if my saves from hotfix 8 are backwards compatible.

I’m butting up against the edges of what I can do in game without seriously progressing and locking myself out of finishing quests I have basically completed, but just need to talk to someone nearby the strange ox at this point.

  • In my main game, I’m doing vanilla 4player coop, all custom characters.

In my side game I’m running party limit begone and the one that re enables achievements, so I can run all the origin characters at once. Which is what I wish I had done for my last run of dos2.

I’m playing on tactician mode too, and trying to see how far I can get without resting. I might add a difficulty mod at some point idk.
