Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Where can I go on lemmy to find things like the video of the recent shooting or other important events that are not just news headlines and memes?
1·12 days agoI understand your frustration! Unfortunately I don’t have an easy answer.
The culture on Lemmy can cause a fair bit of confusion at first. We have this phenomenon where people migrate here and want to have all the niche communities that existed where they came from without the users required to maintain those places. As a result we have a lot of communities with little to no interaction because it’s usually just one or two people contributing. The situation you’re describing is a pretty common example of this.
If you’re looking for existing communities you may have better luck finding them on Lemmyverse. If you still don’t find the type of place you’re looking for, you might consider creating a community for the more generalized content you want to share. If that isn’t something you feel comfortable taking on alone, maybe others would be willing to help you run it and keep things active. Lemmy is full of people looking for places to participate!

2·13 days agoIt wasn’t an endorsement of their policies, just a place that the videos you asked about have been popping up.

Lemmy@lemmy.ml•[Help Design Lemmy] How to describe Lemmy in a single Sentence?English
19·22 days agoLemmy is an open-source social network that functions as a global web of independent forums, allowing you to interact with a federation of sites where no single entity holds total control.
Edit: I think it flows a little better without “next-generation” so I removed it.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Best Lemmy server: for UI, migrating, isolated networks?
4·28 days agoI want my posts to be accesable
If you mean you want to move the entire account to somewhere else as if it started there, you can’t. If you were to create an account on a new instance and imported your old profile data you’d save yourself the time of resubscribing to communities etc but your post history would be brand new again. You can have accounts/alts on multiple instances though and people often do. Some people keep them as backups, some swap accounts multiple times a day for whatever reason.
Using an alternative frontend is different. You login using the same credentials you already have on that instance. All that changes is the UI you’re using, everything on the backend is still the same and you are still the same person to the rest of the Fediverse.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Best Lemmy server: for UI, migrating, isolated networks?
7·28 days ago- Is it that some servers have better UI ?
Some offer multiple frontends so the look changes but the underlying server/content is the same. You can see some examples of them here:
https://old.crazypeople.online/
https://voyager.crazypeople.online/
https://alexandrite.crazypeople.online/
https://photon.crazypeople.online/There are also other platforms like PieFed that interact with Lemmy pretty much seamlessly.
- How do I migrate?
You don’t necessarily have to migrate, you can just make a new account on any other server and import your profile settings like subscriptions/blocks/etc.
- Also, is it possible there are isolated federated networks of leemy (other activity protocol)?
Any instance can defederate from any of the others for any reason. While there are probably stand alone instances that don’t federate at all, most of them have chosen blacklist or whitelist federation to wall off the content they don’t want on their servers. Some of them block more aggressively and for different reasons, but there are so many at this point there’s almost certainly one that would be a good fit for you if you aren’t happy where you’re at.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Everything now have Wireless - WiFi, Bluetooth... Ways it can be turned against us.
7·30 days agoVPN wouldn’t cause it to flag you as a bot, that’s a profile setting you control yourself. @cypherpunks@lemmy.ml detailed how you can change it in comment below.

8·1 month ago@tdTrX@lemmy.ml your account is (accidentally?) flagged as a bot so your posts won’t be seen by anyone who has disabled bot posts. You might want to check your account settings.

Lemmy@lemmy.ml•idk why you guys don't make votes public it's so asocial, it destroys the nuances in communication. not voting - because I prefer to vote when not replying - results in them assuming a downvote is meEnglish
3·1 month agoNah I want the inline thing where you can see stacked profile pictures.
Cool.
Have you approached the devs about it through GitHub or anything? If there is support from others maybe it’s something they’d consider adding. If not you should start there since you’re basically left doing it yourself or living with it otherwise.
Since the software is open source people are free to develop and change it how they see fit. If it doesn’t work how you want it to, change it.

Nasty?
