This might be unpopular, but here goes nothing:

With the correct and fitting (and fair) regulations, oversight by the government and accountabilit, this is a correct and more ethical decision.

Stuff costs money. For now. Infrastructure, wages, repairs, fixes, improvements, new features.

All these things dont come free and we only pay nothing DIRECTLY, because we pay in data, attention and privacy violations.

By fixing this issue, the access to all these things can be secured without the plattform falling appart or having to resort to invasive data harvesting. We could even make these practices illegal, because plattforms would not just die then.

And no, the price should not be so high to generate profit for the executives. Thats why regulation is so important.

In the Modern Age we live in, Social Media is at this point akin to an essential service and should therefore be regulated as such: No profit, but stable maintenance and secure access free from monetary interest for everyone equally.

Before anyone comes in with “Religion of Peace” statements: Conservative Christians would do the same if they were in charge. Or in fact any hardliner + religion combo.

The Authoritarin Aspect is more the problem, then religion. But yes Religion is very susceptible to this.

I read a few comments on why the warmongering GOP now wants to stop sending weapons. Let me use this opportunity to make something clear:

What we see on display are the real world consequences of what happens when you have Fascists in politics! Here is list of some things Fascism is characterized by:

Logical Inconsistencies: Supporting expansion, use and increasing spending of military complexes and police, but then opposing war, even stopping Pentagon funding. Pro-War people would instead pass a bill firmly cementing funding instead and buy stocks of appropriate companies.

Self-Destruction: Shutting their own Government down, loosing support from agencies and taking a massive optical loss, because they are driven by dogma, ideology and emotion. Or cognitive disfunction and dillusion in cases like MTG.

Diplomatic Incapability: Not only an inability to reach across the isle, but not even getting along with nominally allied people WITHIN THE SAME PARTY!

The GOP used Fascism as soil for growing a base and now they reap the reward.

Purely economically speaking that is true, but that’s not the only relevant thing here.

Remember it’s the Chinese Government essentially harvesting massive ammounts of data. A price well worth it, if you use it later down the line in propaganda efforts, marketing strategies and “spotting potential dissidents”.

A more apt punishment would be forcing then to delete the data, prevent future harvesting or massively increase the fine to offset potential political gains.

Can someone explain the political intricacies of such an oath? What would it have meant if it was passed?

There are a lot of reasons, but I think it boils down to the people in charge do not want the embarrassement of crawling back to the EU.

It would be total ego destruction and that is simply untennable. This is what happens when the right gets enough power to make a change and then has to experience consequences.

I would consider the inverse to seeking them out at first.

You tend to avoid people you don’t “click” with, are draining to be around or don’t accept you. Meaning you sort them out, until you have the people left that you are comfortable around, which are often other NDs.

And then it switches around. You increasingly enjoy their company and THEN you seek them out more and more, while the prospect of spending time with NTs becomes less appealing.

Eventual result: NDs attracting each other

Raise your hand if you are convinced this will not impact the people who pay for the blue checkmark. Meaning that a lot of Elon Fanbois / Bots / Fascists will be seen with theit shitty takes (since the checkmark pushes your comments up), while voices of reason will be dragged down further.

Cornell West SHOULD know better then doing stunts like this. Because even if the criticism is correct, he is siphoning blue-voters away to a politically useless or damaging position, like the Green-Party.

Which means he weakens the Democrats.

Which in turn means he strengthens the Fascist-GOP.

We can aknowledge the Truth, but always vote and always vote blue. NEVER risk a blue vote for the need to pride yourself on “fighting the corrupt system”.

Emotional validation is never an argument for weakening the only thing holding back Fascism in the US. To much is at stake!
