I’m disabled and unemployed with only a GED education. I’m not a programmer or anything. I taught myself basic HTML in 1997 when I was 10, but that’s about as far as I go. I know juuuuust enough about tech to understand and appreciate that Lemmy is decentralized and open-source.
But I think you’ll find that a lot of new users are only here because Spez is ruining Reddit. All they’re looking for is a Reddit that doesn’t suck.
I still use Winamp because people made plugins for it (like Chipamp) so I can listen to video game music in its native/emulated format. For me, that’s all Winamp is good for. This new Winamp is probably new software created from the ground up, so those plugins will be useless.

Open-source projects have always been sustainable by donations. Just look at Wikipedia; it’s been around for 22 years. Linux has been around for even longer.
If lemmy.world ever sold out, I’d probably just move to reddthat.com. Problem solved.
