I’m bad about reading usernames before the comment, and I literally thought I recognized your writing style, then looked at the name and said “ohhh Cowbee! I recognize that name! Always good takes”
The imperial boomerang is proving this an impossible balance to find. Welcome to the imperial core, where all the mil-tech testing we’ve done on the rest of the world is finally being turned around and pointed at citizens.
Well put. Ty for educating folks.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Where is Linux not working well in your daily usage? Share your pain points as of 2026, so we can respectfully discussEnglish
7·18 days agoMy latest project is a NixOS based NAS, with the goal being to make something super reproducible I can help friends setup for themselves to build out a decentralized backup/media/adblock/fileshare/communication tool for me and my loved ones.
I understand the concept and use case of flakes and home manager but every time I have attempted to install these, down to just fully copying provided configs, something doesn’t work, and then uninstalling them is a bit of a nightmare. I’ve yet to find a truly accessible NixOS tutorial as someone coming from an Arch from scratch install and tinkering with some 6 other Linux based operating systems.
I’d love for either a fully flake free setup, that is just simple “default style” config files, OR an actually useful tutorial that discusses the generic process of installing these in a way that I can actually understand, because I clearly lack some important piece of knowledge to make it work as intended. So many pieces of software I’m interested in simply say “install the XYZ flake and you’re good to go”. People make Nix seem so simple (and when it works it feels that way) but there’s some disconnect between the author of every tutorial I’ve followed and me as a relatively new to Nix end user.

5·3 months agoDropping to the display manager would kill your desktop session, as far as I know. I think what you maybe want is Hyprlock. Setup whatever style you want, and than spawn both the Hyprlock daemon and activate it on login.

1·3 months agoI agree with the person that said you can spreadsheet-ify any game really, and in that way I know how you feel with Hades. I’ve been playing on a relatively young save lately before digging into Hades 2 and it’s been very refreshing not having all the trinkets and rerolls to really get exactly the build I want. Though even then I feel like there will always be some deviation from your plan, but you’re still given tools to tune your build to what you wanted, and you can still overcome the rng with skill expression. With Balatro I often felt I was just loosing a run because I didn’t get a necessary card or something that felt much more out of my control.
Totally agree with Isaac showing this the best. I’ve got friends that have thousands of hours in that game and still come across combos and interactions between items they haven’t found before.

Nix / NixOS@programming.dev•"Converting" Home Manager and Flake ConfigsEnglish
3·3 months agoI already use Unix pass as my password manager and have a private git server for it. Is there a nice way to get that working with secrets in my config? I know that directly goes against the suggestion of SSH vs GPG, but I’ve already got lots of data saved within that system.

I didn’t love the idea of the Proton basket for all my eggs. Besides I already self host alternatives to the whole g-suite, so I didn’t have the need for a drop in replacement. So I went with Fastmail. I am a huge fan of the alias and masked email options, and beyond those it works as expected for an email service. The mobile apps are decent, and I was able to get them on a de-googled android device. No complaints.
