Social media is a different beast though. Many soviet citizens would have assumed that the homelessness in the US was being exaggerated/fabricated by their government, because as far as they knew no modern government would allow such a thing

I know the internet has caused so many problems, but imagine if Soviet citizens had had a way to see the deprivation of the West

askchapo@hexbear.net•I'm trying to better understand the Russian revolution.English
8·3 days agoThe Bolsheviks played a huge part, but it’s important to remember that they didn’t make the revolution happen. The revolution happened, and when it came to the crunch, it was the Bolsheviks who had been much more hands-on with organizing the proletariat, meaning that 1) they could tell strikers to wait for it… and be listened to, and 2) they understood how highly ordinary people prioritized not being sent to die in a pointless imperialist war. Everyone else drank the imperialist Kool Aid eventually, until only the Bolsheviks had any credibility left
It doesn’t talk so much about how the revolution spread so much as how the Bolsheviks took the reins, but October by China Mieville is a very enjoyable read.

18·4 days agoTbh even if there was sufficient political will to pivot to China (there is some, and it is growing), people underestimate just how entangled European military structures are with the US via NATO. This is by design of course, and a situation EU atlanticists have historically been very happy with, but pulling out is no small ask.

*the US will claim the right to tax you wherever you are in the world. Genuinely blows my mind how insanely punitive the US tax system is. We pay a lot in Europe, and social security taxes are incredibly regressive, but… we do get some modicum of social security out of it at least

28·10 days agoNgl I find Robin Hood endlessly fascinating because there is a folk hero buried in there that actually slaps, but it’s so hard to make it work in a way that is historically convincing i.e. how does ‘rob from the rich, give to the poor’ work under feudalism? Disney squared the circle by making it a story about the evils of taxing peasants of their (checks notes)… gold coins, and the sad thing is that’s basically as close as anyone has come to getting it right. Maybe after the revolution we’ll get a decent Robin Hood adaptation idk

Pirate because you just want to list all available movies in ascending order of runtime

Tbh I’m so tired of this ‘discourse’. Food is universal and literally every culture on the planet has developed marvelous ways to make the produce of their particular climate/ecosystem delicious. America and the UK feature heavily in these surveys because they are advanced capitalist economies, and the only truly bad cuisine is capitalist cuisine.
