What you call “fragmentation” is perhaps better described as “multiple moderation philosophies applied to the same topic” and is actually a fundamental aspect of the ActivityPub protocol, which was designed above all else to create platforms that resist centralization.

I’m not saying you’re wrong to dislike it, but it is definitionally impossible to have both decentralization and centralization at the same time.

You’ve taken my words and twisted their meaning to create an antisocial strawman to attack. I will not engage.

That said: if you are someone who views the power instance administrators have over their instances to be “tyrannical”, then ActivityPub —a protocol which by design decentralizes power away from a CEO and into the diverse hands of instance owners— is probably not the protocol for the sort of platform you’re looking for.

Allowing Lemmygrad to have it’s own “books” community looks like a feature to me, not a problem. The terminally online tend to overpower any other conversation. IMO, we should work to preserve a diversity of perspectives. If all discussions are forced to be centralized we’ve just recreated Reddit with extra steps.

I am with you as a user, but also an instance administrator. Forcing our hosted communities together with federated communities would take away nearly all motivation I have to host an instance in the first place.

The users who post in the “one big community” are the users who want their posts to get the most views. Personally speaking, I generally do not want to be a part of a community full of those kind of people (with the exception of if I have a tech support question or similar).

Not everyone wants to be in the most popular space, this “feature” essentially forces everyone together. I believe the social web thrives with a diversity of approaches to community structure.

Allowing /c/anti_thing to direct all of their users to posts in /c/thing is a bad idea.

Personally I have never viewed the “separation problem” as a problem, but the single largest benefit of federation/decentralization.

If I’m understanding this “feature” correctly, it feels antithetical to what I view as a fundamental aspect of the fediverse, which is diversity of moderation via decentralization. We came to the fediverse with the explicit purpose of escaping the tyranny of the majority that Reddit forces upon mod teams. This feels like a large step on the path to remaking reddit “with extra steps” and would probably be a deal breaker (for me personally at least).

I think a better way to implement a similar feature, is to give mods an ability to “boost” posts into their communities (with consent from the other mod team to prevent brigading). That maintains the separation while still allowing mods to make exceptions and consolidate comment threads where they deem appropriate.

I’m not against hosting a comics community, but it’s also not like /c/StarTrek is overflowing with OC and I’m sure the mods would be happy to have comics content (and you happier with their 10k users).

Yeah I totally agree with pretty much everything you just said.

The problem is nobody wants to grow and maintain a federated “Trek adjacent” community. I’ve even offered the opportunity to host one on this instance and nobody wants to put in the effort.

(Also, I just need to point out that Stamets was not “right” about anything involving our team. He claimed the Risa mods were “transphobic”, and set up a new community where he repeated the claims. When one of our Admins asked Stamets if he intended to continue, he cried harassment and used the attention to promote a GoFundMe.)

Per instance guidelines, submitting on-topic content to relevant communities is not considered spam. But if you want to stay subscribed to /c/STO and block ValueSubtracted’s “spam” StarTrek.website has a block feature you can find on their userpage.

I hear you, but “drawing folks into the fandom tent” was not what Quark’s (or the instance for that matter) was created for. Quark’s has always been “General off-topic chat for the crew of startrek.website.”.

That said, if you or anyone else wanted to create a community with that or a related stated purpose (and promised to grow and actively maintain it in line with instance values) I would be more than happy to entertain the idea. But you can’t have mine lol

The admin team doesn’t make instance decisions based on what’s “popular”. It’s actually against our mission statement. Though that doesn’t mean community input is ignored.

But that being said, admins can see who’s voting and we can see that the downvotes are not coming from users with much/any history in this community. So we are not taking their feedback strongly into account.

I think she’s saying she’s upset we don’t remove enough content from other communities (federated with us but not originating) on this instance. Which is correct, the admins here generally leave content on other communities alone if they are actively moderated.

Ok nevermind she’s apparently saying /c/StarTrek and /c/Risa are “spam”?
