Hello,

I’m wondering… Generation 16 of the framework laptop (these easily repairable, customizable, upgradable laptops) was just released… But what about spare parts of older generations?

What if I’d have bought one a few years ago? Let’s say… Generation 6… I want to increase my disk space, add RAM and replace one USB A port with USB C…

Are spare parts for it still available or are only those for newer generations actually available? Are there even breaking changes between generations? And what about the price?

Anyhone here with expericene in actually replacing parts after years?

I think you’re confused on a couple of points.

    1. The laptop just released was the 16 INCH framework, not the 16th generation. It is only the second model of Framework laptop, coming after the 13 inch. They have released parts for 3 generations 11-13) of Intel motherboards for the 13 inch laptop.
    2. Framework is a fairly new company. They’ve only been around for a handful of years. I believe the very first 13 inch laptops shipped in 2021 (plus or minus a year).

So their track record so far with delivering on their promise of upgrades and repairs is short, but so far it has been stellar.

What do you mean by generation 6? Isn’t the generation numbers just the generation of Intel CPUs they come with? I thought the fw11 was the first.

    I have a fw12, and I’m not concerned.
