So, I watch some anime, but usually the less popular niche ones… and have been debating with myself if a Crunchyroll subscription would finally get me off those dodgy piracy websites… any thoughts and experiences?
Any problems with their DRM on Linux?
Depends on where you are and the anime you want to watch.
I tried it once, but its region blocking prevents me from watching a good chunk of anime they have, this is the sole reason for piracy sites to exist. Not because people want to watch it for free, but they are not able to watch it due to restrictions. Now I just go to twist.moe or 4Anime to watch the shows, they have fewer ads and using a content/ad blocker doe not kick you out.
If you want to help the industry just donate to them or buy a disk.
Edit: I’m not sure about their DRM on GNU/Linux systems, I used CR long ago and DRM tends to update a lot.
Sincerely, no. And I use Crunchyroll a lot. The region locking other users mentioned is really heavy (specially after their partnership with Funimation ended), so depending on where you live it can be a terrible experience.
Also their mobile app is only usable if you pay for premium, but there’s something with their servers, I really don’t know what it is, or if it’s only with me, but it doesn’t matter my internet speed, I always get buffering while using it.
That said, if you only intend to use it on your PC in a browser, just install uBlock Origin and use the free account. The one-week wait for airing shows can be heavy, but everything else just works. Their DRM use to be much worse, but today even the free accounts get 1080p access.
A bit ago they didn’t do any checking for VPNs and youtube-dl could download from them. If that’s still possible I’d say it’s worth, especially since they don’t burn in subs.
It’s shit quality, organized poorly, and even if you’re a subscriber it shoves ads for figures and shit in your face all the time. I get CR for free through my friends and I still never use it.
Anime culture (in the west) is entirely built on the backs of fansubbers and filesharing culture, and imo that’s something to continue to respect. They still deliver the best releases and contribute to the culture instead of trying to smash it out like CR’s aggressive anti-piracy propaganda does. If you really want to support the industry, awful business practices and all, buy blu rays and donate. Don’t support CR.
