I liked the first one better, to be honest, I really enjoyed the screamy vocals on it. This new one feels like Ollie Judge was told that if he keeps it up, his voice won’t survive. Reminds me of when Carla Kihlstedt sounded like she took singing lessons in between Sleepytime Gorilla Museum albums, I liked the off key signing better… I’ll still see Squid when they’re in town, I have tickets already for the show in … checks calendar February… goddammit.
Listening to it again today, it has more of those type of vocals than I remembered when posting the above comment, and a few different but very interesting things happening all over. Yea, it’s growing on me already. :P
I thoroughly enjoy this album, but I can’t stop thinking about how “Undergrowth” is the best song on the album. I just keep coming back to it & have listened to it so many time given it was a single. I haven’t decided which album I like more yet, but I do appreciate the shorter length of this album.
Have you seen the game? I’m not sure how successful of an advertisement this turned out to be, but props to them for trying something different. https://undergrowth.squidband.uk/
