Particularly fun election as a similar story to Canada unfolded - sitting government being unseated was all-but certain until the months leading up to the election.

Instead, sitting government won - by a landslide. For the first time in Australian history, the opposition leader lost his own seat.

This has come as a result of a fierce rejection of Trumpism politics, as Peter Dutton echoed lots of talking points surrounding government efficiency and wokeness.

The Coalition has not seen such a devastating loss before, and there are talks about whether the party is even viable going forward.

Something more relevant to the comrades is the candidate for the Victorian Socialists. Jordan van den Lamb has an online handle ‘purplepingers.’ This online handle was present on the ballot paper.

If you’re not aware, ‘pingers’ is slang in Australia for MDMA or ecstasy-related drugs.

We are a serious country.

It’s interesting to see the rejection of reactionary parties in the wake of trumpism. I highly suspect that conservative parties in the anglo-sphere would have done better if Trump were not the president or was not just failing so hard.

While this is by no means a win for socialism I do think it points to people rejecting the choice of barbarism. They are sitting on the fence of the status quo as it erodes beneath them. Whether they will reach for the lifeline of socialism or are just hesitating before plunging into fascism remains to be seen. (I suspect the latter)

Definitely the latter. They know in their hearts that they are the baddies and always have been, but prefer to keep the mask up for as long as possible, as barbarism is just not proper.

I suspect it will take barbarism enveloping and ripping apart the western world, down to the foundations, for socialism to become the accepted and clear alternative.
